Asking For a Friend: How to Talk to a Tailor

‘Asking for a Friend’ is our style advice series.

As you develop your personal style to incorporate traditional menswear, tailoring becomes essential. We understand if that causes some apprehension. But let us take care of you and you’ll see there’s nothing to worry about.

We offer alterations for free in all our stores, on almost every item. Drop in any time or make an appointment online. Our tailors are easy to speak with and ready to help.

Now let’s talk about tailoring pants. There’s not just one way to do it. You have to think about what kind of fit you want, and what kind of shoes you’re most likely to wear with the finished pants.

For inspiration, here’s how to make your favorite dress pants work three ways by tailoring them differently.

Asking for a Friend: How to Keep White Sneakers White?

Our stylists love to recommend white sneakers because they go with everything. And they do. Whether you’re dressing up or dressing down, please believe there is a white sneaker for you.

Once you find it, you will need to decide: is this a sneaker that looks good slightly dirty? Because yes, that’s a thing—some of the coolest sneakers out right now look filthy.

But if you answered “no,” that’s completely normal. And perhaps you’ll want to know: How should I keep my white sneakers white?

Two words for you: Jason Markk.

That’s the brand name of the shoe cleaner you need, made by Jason M. Angsuvarn, whose company is the first name in the pursuit of spotless sneakers. Check out the videos below to see how to use Jason Markk to clean your white sneakers.

Low Flex Zone: Subversive Spring Designer with Porter Ray

porter11

Nordstrom is based in Seattle right down the street from Sub Pop Records, the label that originally introduced the world to Nirvana. We’re big fans and old friends. Lately, rap music is ascendant in Seattle and now Sub Pop is working with one of the stars of the scene, the literary-minded Porter Ray.

To capitalize on the timing of Ray’s new album Watercolor and our new spring selection, he came through our Seattle flagship to see what was good. Turns out: a lot.

Ray prefers a uniform of tapered pants, hoodies and bomber jackets. Within that framework, he picked graphic designs from brands that are a little underground and not especially glitzy – J.W.Anderson, known for androgyny; Tim Coppens, known for ’90s-era skate style – along with this season’s hottest jackets from Gucci and Givenchy.

We appreciate that in his dressing, as with his music, Ray is traditional yet fearlessly artistic. There’s a frame, and he’s flexing within it.

Below, see more looks as well as quotes from Ray about how and why he raps. Plus: a video about forming his view of style through the lens of a private school uniform.

The Soundtrack to Nigo’s adidas Originals Sweatshirt | Listen Up!

SAM_D_9700576-m

This is a good outfit with styling moves you should copy this fall: the long t-shirt layered underneath the shorter sweatshirt and jacket; the apparent socklessness; the rolled cuff, high enough to show a full commitment to rolled cuffs and not some lame half-measure.

But enough about the outfit. Let’s focus on the sweatshirt.

Designed by Japanese streetwear legend and DJ Nigo, this is a sweatshirt to listen to. Yes, listen. Because it’s printed with graphics ripped off from ’80s rap, made into adidas logos.

Which ’80s rap logos? Step into the old-school, below.

Street Style: Valentina at Rochas

How cute is Valentina Siragusa’s sporty-femme style today? It was a bit chilly during the Rochas show, but I appreciated Valentina’s commitment to spring. Her pastel, patterned full skirt is lovely and makes me long for the sunshine. A bold logo top and classic sneakers add some sportiness, while a maxi coat keeps out the chill.

Street Style: Elisa Nalin at Guy Laroche

Elisa Nalin is one of those women who light up the street scene with her positive energy. It doesn’t hurt that she has amazing personal style, too. I’m obsessed with denim jumpsuits right now and Elisa’s is perfect. I love her layering skills and utilitarian vibe. One of my favorites of the day!
