Three Minutes With: Kenzo

Kenzo Creative Directors, Carol Lim and Humberto Leon (Opening Ceremony founders) chatted with us about their fall 2012 collection, favorite cities for fashion and their ultimate style tip for women. Check out what these fashion darlings had to say.

Image by Gregory Harris via Interview

Who is the Kenzo woman?
When we design a collection, we don’t picture a specific individual or type of person. Instead, we always want to design for all kinds of women, for all occasions. Within the FW12 collection, we focused on different stories for women, whether it’s a woman getting ready to go out in her chicest outfit, or going for a casual lunch date with friends, so that within the collection there were pieces that worked for every woman and every story.

What were the inspirations for your Fall 2012 collection?
This collection was inspired by interiors. There were sharp lines that evoked the sharp corners and linear elements of an interior landscape together with the softer curves and accents that make a home. The prints for this collection are very special to us. One is a hand-drawn marble print, and there are also fruit prints designed exclusively for us by Spanish art director Juan Gatti that were a play on bowls of fruits as home accents.

If you could give a woman just one style tip, what would it be?
Wear something that you are comfortable in. You could be wearing the latest trend, but if you aren’t comfortable in it, it won’t look good. To us, the most fashionable thing you can do is to look like yourself and embrace your individual style.

What’s next for Kenzo?
We want to push ourselves and Kenzo into the future. Part of Kenzo’s history, and its future, is to inspire people, to make them feel bold, to laugh, to go do something interesting. There is a whole universe to explore with the house, and we’ve only just started a very exciting voyage.

What are the essentials every woman needs in her wardrobe this fall?
Knits are always an important part of a fall wardrobe – knits were an important story in our fall collection for this very reason. They are so versatile, and can really fit any occasion. And of course, fall is a great time to invest in a coat for the season, so we also focused on outerwear. We especially loved the wool coats with the pleated bottom that zips off to become a cropped jacket.

What other fashion designers or innovators  do you admire?
There are so many brands in the industry that we admire for different reasons. We’ve been lucky enough to collaborate with some of these—for example, Juan Gatti is someone that we’ve long admired in the fashion industry, and we collaborated with him to create the exclusive fruit prints for the FW12 collection.

What is the most fashionable city in the world?
New York will always be a city that inspires us—the street style in New York is unlike that in any other city. That being said, we have been lucky enough to travel to many different parts of the world, and each location has been an inspiration to us in different ways.

Meet Shannon, our Downtown Seattle Store Personal Stylist Manager. We tapped her to share what she and her customers are loving most for summer. Here’s a list of her top 10 favorites.

1. Trouvé Faded Denim Shirt. Denim is still in; wear it as a shirt or leave it open and throw it over a great summer dress.

2. NARS ‘Thakoon’ Nail Polish. I love these bright, fun colors! They are limited-edition, so once they’re gone, they’re gone.

3. Tracey Reese Cowl Neck Dress. Yellow is the ‘it’ color. This piece is effortless and breezy—perfect for any special occasion for summer. Need a dress to wear to a wedding? Check!

4. Sequin Small Crystal Station Enamel Bangle. Layer these on to create some chunky accents with all of your lighter pieces. You can wear one or five and create a unique look every time.

5. Ali Ro Short Sleeve Anorak. The perfect summer jacket, it’s lightweight and stylish. Transition into fall by layering a long-sleeve top underneath.

6. Ray-Ban ‘Classic Wayfarer’ 50mm Sunglasses. Who doesn’t adore these updated, casual colors? My favorite is the matte grey brown—they go with everything.

7. DVF ‘Drew Connect-Dia Jacquard’ Shoulder Bag. The perfect combination of function and trend. Get it now and be set for fall.

8. Superga ‘Cotu’ Sneakers. These are all the rage right now! Cool, classic and comfortable for everyday ventures. Choose a basic or go bold with a fun fashion color for summer and pair them with your printed bottoms!

9. Splendid Print Short. What a great way to transition into summer while staying on trend with printed bottoms. I love this pattern, because it’s subtle and easy to wear with so many things—great with a denim shirt and Superga sneakers to complete the look!

10. Johnathan Adler Gothic Rose’ iPhone Case. Our phones need updating too. I just bought this and LOVE it.

Hope everyone has a great and sunny summer!

Chriselle: Simple, Sheer and Soft

Take a note from Chriselle: “Simple, sheer and soft is the name of the game when finding the perfect basic tank.”

The overlapping silk sections on her Rory Beca camisole add just the right amount of interest for a basic that plays nice anywhere you take it—and pairing neutrals with one colorful piece is a genius way to keep things simple and sophisticated without sacrificing individual style.

Be sure to see more from this wardrobe stylist turned personal style blogger over at The Chriselle Factor—including this savvy video on wearing one sleeveless blouse four different ways.

Summer Texture: Black Leather

We’re used to sporting black leather jackets, handbags and shoes, but how about skirts, shorts and dresses? Check out our tips on how to work more leather into your wardrobe, from basic-as-can-be to ultra daring.

A.L.C. ‘Mika’ Stretch Leather Dress | Cacharel Leather Top

Keep it simple. Black leather clothes make a bold statement without a lot of fuss. Pair a leather dress with minimal jewelry, and leather shorts or a skirt with a relaxed T-shirt.

Boy. by Band of Outsiders Skirt | Rachel Zoe ‘Nora’ Leather Vest

Layer with care. Adding a black leather vest is a great way to toughen up feminine summer outfits, like a floral dress. And leather leggings provide the ideal palette for oversized tees and slouchy button-ups.

Complement with color. Think of black leather as a blank slate on which to play with bright colors and prints. Try adding neon accents for an ultra-modern look.

Accessorize. Bags, shoes and even jewelry look chic in black leather. We love Kelly Wearstler’s boho-punk necklace, and this Longchamp backpack is perfect for hot summer days.

Marion in Turquoise & Camel

This playful pop of color caught our eye over at Marionberry Style. We love the airy summer look paired with a no-nonsense watch and a pretty pair of nude pumps.

Marion told us Nordstrom is practically her second home (we heart you, too!) and gives some sage styling advice in her post: “Wearing brighter, complementary colors near your face (or upper half) makes people look at your face more. The bottom half of my body is covered in a neutral camel…which makes the top half pop!” Couldn’t have said it better ourselves.

Alexander Wang’s Spring Campaign

Ethiopian model Liya Kebede hit the racetrack for Alexander Wang‘s sporty spring 2012 campaign video. Check it out below and read on for behind-the-scenes photos.

Quite the whirlwind, right? Believe it or not, Kebede wasn’t actually tearing down the track in this video—or even sitting inside a car. Here’s what it looked like while they were filming:

Great Gatsby: Art Deco Glam

The trailer for Baz Luhrmann’s The Great Gatsby starting Carey Mulligan, Tobey Maguire and Leonardo DiCaprio was just released this week. Now, a 7-month wait until it opens. Jeepers creepers.

We already know we’ll be seeing it, because we can’t stop staring at the costumes—all that classic glamour and flapper-chic. We also couldn’t stop wishing this movie had been out back during high school American literature class.

The trailer got us thinking: What would we wear to a Great Gatsby party? We did a little online window shopping and found a handful of Art Deco- and Roaring Twenties-inspired pieces for putting on the Ritz. We’re sure Daisy and Gatsby would think these are the bee’s knees.

Florals, Lace and Sweet Sunny Days

Kudos to our Visual Merchandising Team for beautifully displaying some of the looks and trends we’re excited about this season, and showing how to incorporate them into any occasion.

We’re racking our brains to think of absolutely every possible excuse to wear this exquisite black lace Valentino tunic dress. Thankfully, the rest of our windows have inspirations—from florals and prints to color and shine—appropriate for anywhere your day or night might take you.
