Stars at the Oscars Wore Armani

The Oscars: they came, they happened—perhaps you heard things got interesting—and stars wore Giorgio Armani.

When the dress code is black tie, you cannot and will not go wrong with an Armani tuxedo. The famed Italian brand also makes gowns—that’s what Viola Davis wore when she gave an acceptance speech that was better than most movies—and below you’ll find images of both from the 89th Academy Awards.

Giorgio Armani on His 40th Anniversary

This past June, Giorgio Armani opened Armani/Silos, his own museum in the center of Milan, to showcase his life and work. It’s been a big year for the house of Armani—but not as big as 1975 was.

Forty years ago the legendary brand began, and today it is one of the most successful fashion companies in the world. But this is an industry that tends to favor the future. There were celebrations around the anniversary and the Armani/Silos opening, and then it was time to get back to work. Yesterday in Milan, the house presented their spring ’16 collection, and we were lucky enough to get some time with the iconic designer himself.

Here’s what Giorgio Armani has to say about consistency, passion, dedication and desire—and images from a new, super striped collection that contains threads of the past four decades even as it walks confidently forward.

Armani Presents Armani/Silos in Milan

How would you celebrate 40 years in fashion? Just weeks ago in Milan, on the exact same day that the city’s 2015 Expo opened, Giorgio Armani nodded at the past and the future with Armani/Silos—a museum of his work and times. Set to be open through the end of October, the first exhibit is a showcase of the sleek, structured yet expressive looks that established the designer’s name in Italy, America and beyond. Says Architectural Digest: “The straightforward structure, named Armani/Silos for the building’s origins as a 1950s granary, is yet another testament to the legendary designer’s practiced minimalism.”

“I thought that bringing clothes, accessories, bags and technical drawings together in a single space, as an archiving project with a particular, personal perspective, would be a concrete way to turn the past into a foundation for the future,” said Armani.

For more from the designer, and stunning images as well, keep reading.

Street Style: Marta at Dior

Carving out a spot to photograph all the gorgeous girls at the Dior show was really tough, but I’m glad I could get a snap of Marta. There’s something so classic and chic about a full skirt and blouse combination. However, Marta keeps her look ultramodern thanks to interesting cuts and graphic pattern. A Dior bag is a must in Paris, and everywhere really! Bright, bold statement heels are fun and add some whimsy to this sleek, feminine look.

Street Style: Charlotte at Issey Miyake

Suede is definitely the superstar texture of the month, and Charlotte’s slim-leg pants are killer. I love the simple neutral palette, with its rustic western flair. A draped denim jacket is a great way to infuse some utilitarian, casual charm to a look. A snakeskin skinny belt and mini bag add some pops of print.

Street Style: Joanna at Balmain

We all know and love Joanna Hillman here on The Thread. She carries her New York style with her across the globe. A modern white moto jacket adds great contrast to her slim separates. Buckle boots continue the moto theme, while her signature red lip adds a pop of color.

Street Style: Tamara at Julien Macdonald

Tamara (Glam and Glitter) is a regular on The Thread, thanks to her trendy, feminine style. She’s just one of those girls who looks amazing in anything. This biker-chic ensemble fits right in at London Fashion Week. The moto jacket is still everywhere, and graphic jumpers are kitschy cute. Her blue palette works well against the grey skies we’ve been having. Tamara is stylish and a total sweetheart: the best of both worlds!

Street Report: Hannah at Temperley London

Hannah has some seriously enviable lipstick skills! Her bold lip is the perfect addition to her denim look and takes everything up a notch. Of course, a fur collar and leopard heels help a bit, too. Hannah’s outfit is a LFW home run, thanks to her mix of high-street casual and posh details. Now, if only I could figure out how to get that perfect topknot…

Street Report: Wendy Outside Mulberry

Who knew overalls could look so chic? The mechanic classic is getting an elegant makeover, thanks to Wendy Gilmour’s modern styling.

Her simple button up and sleek blazer dress up the look, and that textural clutch is one of my faves of the week. A one-piece can be a daring statement, but Wendy pulls it off flawlessly.
