There’s Nothing Like Home: Inside Ovadia & Sons’ SS 18 Collection

Ovadia & Sons designer and native New Yorker Ariel Ovadia told us the inspiration for his spring/summer 2018 collection was Polo clothes and hip-hop mixtapes from the mid to late 1990s—which where huge in New York City, and which he and his brother, Shimon, loved as teenagers. As if blessing this choice of references, one of the master rappers of that mixtape era, Fabolous, sat front row at the show.

The clothes were great: Key pieces included track pants and bucket hats, with flames, checkerboard patterns, and deep, vibrant color-blocking. Interior design was humorous and aimed directly at our buyers: shipping boxes, buying checklists and ballpoint pens (message: Place your order).

On the more artistic side of things, though, it was cool to see the clothes while hearing the rapper Prodigy, a legendary artist from that same era who recently passed away, through the speakers. The homage was real and felt.

Get the Look: How to Dress Up Your Hoodie

Photos by Kristin Yamada.

By now, we’re all up to speed on the dominance of the fashion sneaker. Worn to work, with dresses for a night out and at front row during Fashion Week, kicks have become a perennial shoe option regardless of the outfit or outing.

Based on our extensive street reconnaissance, we can now report that the fashion hoodie is the next activewear piece to get the all-the-time treatment. We spoke with our Nordstrom styling director, Ruth Basloe, about all the ways to wear the hooded sweatshirt, including with suits, dresses and heels.

Asking for a Friend: How to Dress Up Without Wearing a Suit?

Situation: You’re stepping out and need to look great. Good is not good enough. But you don’t want to go full formal. You will ask yourself: How to dress up without wearing a suit?

The big idea in this and the following looks is to mix suiting elements with stuff you’d wear normally. Make this casualized concept part of your personal style. Keep in mind dark colors can be a shortcut to elevated style, and be sure your jacket and shoes are always on point.

Street Style: How Four International Cities Are Wearing Athleisure Now

It’s no longer fair to call athleisure (aka sportscore) a trend. Its staying power has been cemented by its 2016 entry in the Merriam-Webster dictionary. The sporty casual style that began with the sneaker craze and went on to inspire joggers (tailored sweatpants) now touches fashion at all levels: designers Alexander Wang and Stella McCartney have both collaborated with adidas; for Spring 2017, Versace incorporated nylon and spandex for an urban, athletic look and Vera Wang outfitted a cabal of health goths. Designers from Rihanna for Fenty Puma to Karl Lagerfeld for Chanel and Fendi construct sneakers meant for going out for a drink rather than a jog.

But the style is much more complicated than sneakers and yoga leggings. While its appeal lies in comfort and simplicity, the new way to wear athleisure is to inject some obvious non-workout components. Flashier elements like tulle skirts, jaunty scarves and luxury handbags signal that the wearer is adopting the style, not coming straight from the gym. We snapped some successful instances of the lifestyle look on the streets of Copenhagen, Los Angeles, New York and Stockholm. Here are some ways to wear athleisure now.

How to Style Activewear for Everyday Wear

There’s no doubt that the athleisure trend has peaked. Sometimes it’s difficult to determine whether a barre class has just let out or if the coterie of toned ladies in leggings and sweatshirts are simply fashionable friends leaving a brunch spot. What’s not to like about a look that favors elastic waistlines and stretchy fabrics? Especially for brunch.

That’s not to say that you can show up at your next dinner party in a tank top and drawstring shorts à la Richard Simmons. Here are some basic guidelines and street styles for working your workout clothes around town.

Mesh and Sports Bras

Off-duty models embraced the activewear-anywhere ethos early on. Understandably, their packed schedules and frequent wardrobe changes favor these easy separates.

Mesh shirts and mesh insets on pants, jackets and tanks introduce an airy element in athleisure clothes that can be subtly—or not-so-subtly—revealing. Mesh shirts over a sports bra or an opaque triangle bra are sporty and sexy. With the rise of the cropped tops and midriff-baring styles in casual wear, sports bras as shirts are also popping up. Whether under a mesh layer or stand-alone, the style is overly daring for everyday errands but perfect for the club or a concert. Pair both with jeans to elevate the locker room look.
