I Love the ’90s | Fashion Week Beauty Trends

Photos by Indigital Images

To the tune of George Michael’s “Freedom! ’90,” Carla Bruni, Claudia Schiffer, Naomi Campbell, Cindy Crawford and Helena Christensen closed the Versace show in Milan, statuesque in sparkling gold dresses. The return of the 1990s supermodels spread like wildfire through Instagram.

On the 20th anniversary of her brother’s death, Donatella, standing arm in arm with her muses, paid tribute to the groundbreaking work of the late Gianni Versace. Featuring prints and designs he created, the show was alive with the spirit of Gianni’s most influential decade and reaffirmed the trend we’ve seen throughout the season: the ’90s are back in a major way.

From brown lipliner to sleek blowouts, see how the decade’s glamazon beauty permeated Fashion Month. Plus, shop these products to create your own original super look.

With all eyes on the runway, backstage beauty experts produced a bevy of fresh cat-eye looks, introducing audiences to a range of new shapes, colors and highly desirable drama. Below, we present Fashion Month’s best liner looks (plus shoppable links) that usher in a new era of feline flicks.

New York Fashion Week Tibi Bobbi Brown Jinsoon Beauty Fashion Week Style

Tibi’s Runway Beauty Is for Girls Who Want to Have Fun (with Minimal Makeup) | Backstage Beauty

Tibi designer Amy Smilovic envisions spring with a nod to 1980s style, or its un-style, according to Smilovic. For the designer, that period was obviously an energetic era, when fashion wasn’t so prescriptive and serious. Her goal this season was to create something less about perfection and more about authenticity. Her suiting and dresses acted like blank canvases that were lightly adorned with colorful PVC corsets, belts, stripes and straps.

The beauty, led by Bobbi Brown and JINsoon, followed suit. Each model’s look was tailor-made to enhance her specific features without detracting from her unique beauty and that of the clothes. The result? Luminous skin with touches of color, hints of lime green, lilac and tangerine, similar to Smilovic’s accents on her sporty separates and power suits.

Get the Healthy Glow from kate spade new york’s Playful Runway | Backstage Beauty

Inspired by the romantic energy of New Orleans, kate spade new york’s 2018 spring collection exudes whimsy and fun with feminine floral patterns, lace hemlines and plenty of pinks. The delicate M·A·C makeup from the show featured a healthy, flushed cheek on the models’ radiant skin, and was finished with a barely there, dusty-rose pout that harmonized with Deborah Lloyd’s youthful and spirited spring nail designs. From lips to tips, the overall softness of this beauty culminated with subtle, easy-to-recreate nail art from Deborah Lippmann.

Che Bella: Milan Fashion Week Beauty

Some of the most advanced style in Milan this week came via the makeup and hair on the runway. While there were still shows that embraced the no-makeup makeup trend that has been prevalent in recent seasons, this is Italy, and glamour has rarely been barefaced on the Boot.

Laura Mercier Celebrates 20 Years in Beauty and Talks Bloggers, ’80s Blush Colors and Baking

Industry icon Laura Mercier‘s French accent is as smooth as her widely worshiped translucent powder. When we spoke with her at the 20th anniversary celebration for her cosmetics line, her voice lilted musically as she reflected sincerely and serenely on her two decades in the business.

As a sought-after makeup artist turned beauty maven, Laura Mercier has developed a successful global line with a devoted following; many of her signature products have become the industry gold standard—her tinted moisturizer has a spot in most pros’ bags. In a candid conversation, Mercier shared a sliver of the wisdom she’s gleaned from her achievements, including the beauty trends she’s glad to see fade, the ones she’s embracing and how bloggers have revolutionized the industry.

What have been some of the biggest changes in the beauty industry in the past 20 years?

Today it’s obviously social media, pop culture, reality TV that’s really influencing the beauty industry more than anything. You no longer can talk to people the way you used to. Even advertisements are done differently. I mean, bloggers! We were laughing at the beginning, like,“Oh my God, do they think they are beauty editors?” We didn’t take it seriously. And look at it now. They are the biggest influencers. And we have great ones! So it’s like a new generation, new culture, almost, in the beauty industry. I talk about it as a culture.

Spring 2016 Nail Color Trends: Pastel Inspiration | Beauty On Set

Spring 2016 Nail Polish Color Trends-4

At our spring 2016 beauty photo shoot, we couldn’t get enough of pastels. Why? Our makeup artist extraordinaire, Kali Kennedy put it best: “‘Fresh’ is the first word that pops into my mind when I think about spring beauty. Something that’s exciting and new and trend-driven that you really just knock out of the park with all of the energy you’ve been keeping inside through the fall and winter.” And right now, nothing is saying fresh and full of energy to us more than subtle-but-punchy pastels.

Nails are the easiest place to experiment with trends and colors. With countless shades out there, we love the look of one on every finger, so go get crazy all you want. The best part of all: these looks are totally doable at home–no special tricks, tools or mani appointment required. Just a few good old fashion pretty pots of nail color.

Our Top Favorite Beauty Trends Seen at Fashion Week | Backstage Beauty

Fashion week makeup

Our beauty team hit up a slew of backstage runways at Fashion Week, catching up and grazing shoulders with industry bigwigs the likes of Bobbi Brown, François Nars, stila, butter LONDON and Jin Soon Choiand taking notes on fall’s biggest makeup trends.

What stood out to them as the biggest beauty trends on the spring ’16 runways? For one, individualized contouring and brows, like the ones created at the hands of experts like Shiseido’s Dick Page for Narciso Rodriguez. In seasons past, we’ve seen our share of strong contouring and bold brows, but this year was different. Show after show, artists let the model’s natural features dictate the beauty, focusing on accentuating natural assets, like amping up already god-given bushy brows.
