Bobbi Brown Interview: Her Best Advice, Travel Must-Haves, Summer Menu and What’s New

Bobbi Brown is a woman who needs no introduction, so let’s jump right into our recent interview with this much-adored beauty mogul as she shares her expertise, tips and tricks, a delicious (and simple!) summer soup recipe and so much more.

What’s the best beauty advice you’ve ever been given?
Bobbi Brown: My mother taught me that confidence is true beauty.

As a person who loves healthy food, what things do you find yourself going back to this summer? Even better, do you have a favorite recipe you could share?
My three-step soup on my blog, Everything Bobbi, is perfect for summer as it’s easy and works well with whatever veggies you have on hand.

Another summer favorite is my Coconut Kale Shake. I make it using coconut milk, cocoa powder, chia seeds, chocolate protein powder, frozen organic banana, frozen organic cherries and, of course, kale. It’s great for breakfast or as a midday snack.

Backstage Beauty: Bobbi Brown & JINsoon for Tibi

The makeup look at Tibi was “pretty but not overly done” to balance the Alaskan-Inuit inspired clothing. Fresh, clean skin and illuminated cheeks were paired with a soft wash of pink on eyes (including applying blush in Nude Pink on top of white eyeshadow!) and matte pink lips in Pink Martini Lip Color (launching fall 2015). Only a hint of Everything Mascara was used to finish the look.

After a base coat, nails were applied with two coats of Nostalgia. Once dry, she then painted a curved line across the middle of the nail to tips in a new color called Doux (launching this spring). According to Choi, “It’s okay if they’re all a little different – if it curves, just go with it!”

Stylist Picks: Sparkling Accents

“I love making women feel beautiful and empowered,” says Beauty Stylist Nadia Tyby at Nordstrom Fashion Island in Newport Beach, CA. “And everything about make-up is about a feeling.” If, as the holiday season approaches, the feeling you’re going for is sparkly and bright, Tyby can help with that, too. The four-year Nordstrom beauty pro says she’s already got her favorite Adrianna Papell shimmering party dress primed for party duty, and she was more than happy  to turn us on to the three top tools in her glitter bag.

For the face: “I am obsessed with beautiful luminating skin. Shimmer Brick by Bobbi Brown is a perfect balance of shimmer and radiance leaving the skin looking healthy and youthful.”

For the eyes: “Adorn your eyes by pressing perfectly sparkly Mac Pressed Pigments onto the lids. Totally dresses up any outfit. Feeling a little sassy? Before applying your shadow, Spray Fix Plus on to your shadow brush and then pack that pigment on!”

For the lips:Dior Golden Shock – Addict is pretty amazing. It’s lightweight and plumping, creating fuller luscious lips that say ‘kiss me.'”

Backstage Beauty: Bobbi Brown + Jin Soon at Tibi

The spring 2015 Tibi collection included an array of textures of quilting, embroidery and pleating. It featured a neutral color palette—ranging from a base of earth tones in grey, white and sand and paired with touches of watery blues, fiery oranges and dark greens. The monochromatic makeup look created by Kimberly Soane from Bobbi Brown replicated flushed windswept cheeks, rosy bitten lips and warm neutral eyes.

Street Report: Caroline Outside Mara Hoffman

It was another scorcher at Lincoln Center today, but Caroline handled the humidity with grace. She says she’s a luxe-loving lady and can’t wait to break out her leather and fur for fall.

Her impeccable eye for color and creative silhouettes definitely puts her on my style-star list!

Dark Chocolate

We can’t get enough dark chocolate—but at the moment we’re talking about the kind you wear, not the kind you eat.

Dark brown is a key supporting color for fall’s diverse palette of brights and neutrals alike, so we’re really savoring the sight of this delicious shade on some of the season’s top trends.

1 – Sporty Leathers. We are big fans of fall’s leather sportswear trend. Hot tip: A decadently dark brown leather shift dress will definitely satisfy your most intense chocolate craving. [Pictured: Vince Leather Tunic Dress]

2 – Quilted Handbags. There’s something about this plush, quilted bag that reminds us of a big chocolate bar. It almost makes us want to break off a piece and take a bite. Or, you know, just show its ultra-luxe look off to all of our friends to earn mega style points. [Pictured: MARC JACOBS ‘Quilting – Large Single’ Shoulder Bag]

3 – Brown Eye Color. Perhaps the most versatile palette in your makeup drawer, a mocha eyeshadow is a deliciously alluring element of almost any fall beauty look, whether you wear it day or night. [Pictured: Bobbi Brown Eyeshadow in ‘Chocolate’]

4 – Chocolate Metals. We’re crazy for watches and jewelry in cocoa-colored metals. Wear this earthy tone with inky hematite or yellow-toned gold jewelry to achieve an opulent, yet edgy effect. [Pictured: Michael Kors ‘Blair’ Watch]

5 – Patently Sweet Heels. Chocolate-brown pumps appear especially indulgent in patent, and when you put a bow on top, they’re simply irresistible. Like all of fall’s darkest browns, these pairs coordinate perfectly with fall brights such as fiery red, harvest gold and teal. [Pictured: Stuart Weitzman ‘Bowright’ Pump]

Backstage Beauty: Peony and Python at Tibi

To complement Tibi’s collection this season, Bobbi Brown created a fresh and clean face for the models with a pop of peony on the cheeks and a polished eye.

The look for this show was inspired by an exclusive palette that Amy and Bobbi have collaborated on for Spring 2011 called “Peony and Python.” The print of the palette was inspired by Bobbi’s love of peonies and Amy’s solid colors of the season. Check out the packaging.

Backstage, Bobbi Brown was applying makeup using the “Peony and Python” Collection. The palette has soft grays and a deep purple. Bobbi used black gel liner on the eye. On the cheeks, she used Desert Pink Blush and applied a Rose Highlighter Pen on top. To finish the look, she used her Rich Lip Color in Lilac. Bobbi was right when she told me, “The makeup for this show is very pretty and strong.”
