Crispy Seasoned Fried Chicken Recipe | What’s Cooking

Extra Crispy Seasoned Fried Chicken Recipe with Honey Chipotle Glaze from Nordstrom. Photo by Jeff Powell

Fried chicken. Yes, please! It’s perfect hot or cold–which makes it one of the best picnic recipe ideas. There are a lot of secrets to crispy skin and flavorful meat out there; here’s Nordstrom Sixth & Pine Restaurant’s for mouthwatering results: a double dredge in heavily seasoned flour with a good, long wait in between to let the herbs and spices make their way into the pieces before frying. The sweet and spicy honey chipotle dip adds a modern twist to this classic. Pair it with our Deviled Egg Potato Salad for a lunch, dinner or picnic that’s perfect for summer.Extra Crispy Seasoned Fried Chicken Recipe with Honey Chipotle Glaze from Nordstrom. Creamy Deviled Egg Potato Salad Recipe | What’s Cooking

Creamy Deviled Egg Potato Salad recipe from Nordstrom with mustard, pickles and eggs. Photo by Jeff Powell.

This is the kind of recipe that I especially love. Yes, because deviled eggs are having a comeback moment and this classic salad is delicious—creamy, tangy and punctuated by the crisp texture of diced celery and onion—but more so because it brought back memories and offers a strong foundation that can be built on. After I made it at home, this creamy potato salad with eggs, mustard and pickles (served at our Sixth & Pine restaurants) took me right back to my grandmother’s kitchen and her famous egg salad.

This is the kind of recipe you pass down the family line and are asked to share at barbecues and picnics. It’s the kind of recipe to which each new cook adds a special spin making it her own. After my first taste, I added my grandmother’s secret egg salad ingredient—and I don’t think she’d mind me sharing. It took me years to pry it out of my sister, who was one of the only people my grandmother divulged her winning ingredient to: apple cider vinegar. Simple, but what a difference it makes to the memories on my palette.

While this classic potato salad with mustard and egg is perfectly flavored and balanced as is, there are so many different ways you could adjust it for a personalized touch: adding bacon (of course), scallions and cucumber, blue cheese with hot sauce for a Buffalo-style twist, shrimp with capers and parsley, harissa, scallions with dill and lox, paprika and chorizo … the list goes on. Make this recipe for your next summer gathering, and feel free to make it your own.

Housemade Cheeseburger with Peppercorn Aioli and Balsamic Roasted Red Onions | What’s Cooking

Nordstrom Bistro Gourmet Hamburger Recipe with Roasted Garlic Peppercorn Aioli and Roasted Red Onions in Balsamic Vinegar. Photo by Jeff Powell.

Your search for the best burger for a Memorial Day or summer barbecue is over. At least mine is. This cheeseburger, served at our Bar Verde locations, is perfect for upping anyone’s gourmet grilling game. The simple-to-make aioli is spiked with peppercorns and nutty roasted garlic. (Our roasted garlic recipe couldn’t be easier to make this flavor a staple in your pantry–buying bulk cloves means no annoying peeling or messy squeezing required!) I had enough aioli left over to use as dipping sauce for french fries, which my dinner guests and I were all pretty happy about. I.e., it’s really good.

Topping it all, the bite of red onions gets tamed and their sweetness enhanced by being roasted with some balsamic vinegar, thyme and honey (as in our Skirt Steak with Romesco Sauce recipe). Both of these toppings can be made ahead–ideal for both entertaining and bringing them along with you to a picnic BBQ.

At our restaurants, as in this recipe, they grind beef in house for their hamburgers. It produces superior flavor. Plus, you know exactly what is and isn’t going into your ground beef (like some un-called-for pancetta I threw in this recipe; I think cured pork is always called for). If you don’t have a grinder, meat can be also be ground by pulsing (after a stiffening chill in the freezer) in a food processor in 2-3 batches. If using store-bought, try to purchase the freshest, premium ground beef whenever possible.

Nordstrom White Chocolate Bread Pudding Recipe | What’s Cooking

White Chocolate Nordstrom Bread Pudding Recipe from Nordstrom Bistro; photo by Jeff Powell.

White Chocolate Bread Pudding: it’s the most-asked-for recipe here on the blog and the most popular dessert at Nordstrom Cafe Bistro. There’s a reason for that—it’s pretty incredible. While baking, the pudding filled my kitchen with the smell of French toast, and the half-exposed bread on top developed a light crust, which added a nice textural contrast to the silky interior. The orange zest gives the raspberry sauce a tasty hint of citrus, while the white chocolate cream sauce takes the whole decadent dish to a very special place. And (bonus!) it can be made ahead of time. White chocolate and raspberries are a winning combination, and this is a perfect recipe for celebrating Mother’s Day—or any time you need a ridiculously good dessert.

Gratinéed Brussels Sprouts with Prosciutto and Gruyère, Holiday Entertaining Menu Side Dish | What’s Cooking

Our chefs, Wit & Wonder Gifts team and blog editor take the stress out of planning a full-course menu that’s memorable (in a good way) and won’t keep you stuck in the kitchen all night. In a special What’s Cooking series, we’re serving up six perfectly paired, delicious recipes and inspiration for holiday entertaining—from drinks and dessert to décor and gifts.

Have picky eaters at your table? Not to worry. The layers of salty, complex prosciutto and melted Gruyère in this gratin recipe are far too tempting for even the biggest Brussels sprout-ophobe. Plus, cream added to a super-reduced chicken stock creates an incredible sauce that coats the caramelized Brussels sprouts in yum. Since that Bistro Crab Salad first course was so light and refreshing, we’re okay with this gratin side dish falling on the more indulgent end of things.
