Introducing the Converse Chuck II with Damion Silver | Designer Q&A

conversechuckIIRedesigning the Converse Chuck Taylor All Star is a risky proposition. We’re talking about the most classic American sneaker, whose design has gone relatively untouched since 1917. A true shoe of the people.

Think about it. Which other garment is worn by young and old folks alike so prevalently? And in various stages of pristine or tattered? Chucks are like Levi’s 501s for your feet.

And yet: Converse designer Damion Silver was faced with a problem. Foot fatigue was an issue. Especially if you’re trying to wear them every day, All Stars have always been a little hard on your dogs.

Enter Lunarlon, Nike cushioning technology.

That’s just one way Silver–a visual artist who shows his own paintings at galleries all over the world–created the Chuck II, a stellar and more comfortable sequel to Chuck Taylor All Star.

We spoke with Silver on the phone at Converse headquarters in Boston proper about shoveling snow, his unrealistic fantasy of one day skateboarding on a frozen golf course–and the pressures of redesigning the brand’s #1 seller worldwide.

Totally Awesome to the Max | Throwback Thursday

early-80s-fashion-throw-back-thursday-nordstrom-catalog-2Let’s take a peek into the mind of this sassy young trendster from our fall 1983 catalog. What’s going on this year in her early ’80s world that she might be thinking about? The mall, for sure–and her Walkman. Spandau Ballet and The Police. Trapper Keepers covered with scratch ’n sniff stickers. Her bitchin’ Patrick Nagel poster. Potato chips that came in a box and the invention of the McNugget. Flashdance and Risky Business. Being barfed out by various, grody things. The two Coreys and/or Christie Brinkley. The A-Team and Cheers. Accessorizing with Lip Smackers. M.A.S.H. and cootie catchers.

She could also be thinking about the socioeconomic implications of the lingering Cold War and on her way to a successful career as a rocket scientist. Whatever it may be, we know this much is true: 1) after 32 years, you’re definitely going to find something to laugh at about your younger self; and, 2) those gold aviators and red Converse high-tops are still totally rad.

New! Converse Chuck Taylor All Star Andy Warhol Collection

converse andy warhol

Andy Warhol
Converse Extra Special Value
c. 1985-86
Synthetic polymer paint on canvas
116 x 180 inches

Check out Converse Extra Special Value, above. That’s artwork featuring classic Converse All Stars by the late pop master Andy Warhol, mimicking his own early work in advertising. As an illustrator and graphic designer, Warhol sometimes drew shoes for ads. As an artist, he brought elements of ads into his pieces shown in galleries and museums, challenging people to see them in a different light.

If that were the only link, Converse’s new Chuck Taylor All Star Andy Warhol Collection sneakers would make sense by themselves. But it gets deeper. Adorned with Warhol’s beloved Campbell’s Soup cans, the Converse X Warhol sneakers are a swirl of classic American products-for-the-people.

In conversation with Carrie Dedon, assistant curator at  Seattle Art Museum, we go even further. Among other things, we learn from Dedon that Warhol definitely saw himself as a product, and we find out what his exaltation of logo design had to do with his concept of democracy.

Street Report: Erika Outside Just Cavalli

Erika’s dress seems simple at first glance, but it actually has a lot of design details and interesting touches. The asymmetrical hem and rounded shoulders give this piece a lot of personality, while her fringe appliqué is a trendy focal point. I love the play of casual vs. dressy in Erika’s look. And sneakers are still majorly popular—comfort is king!

Street Report: Abby on Howard St.

How cute is Abby in her prairie-via-NYC look? You guys know how much I love the color red, so obviously I am biased towards Abby’s bold monochromatic choice. The full skirt has exploded on the street scene this season, and the high waist and subtle layering of Abby’s skirt add visual interest. Sneakers and mirrored aviators keep things youthful and fun.

Street Report: Laura Outside Issey Miyake

Laura is an English girl in Paris, but she stays true to her London roots. Her breezy culottes are light and sweet in contrast with her edgy quilted moto jacket.

We all know that Londoners like to have a little fun with fashion, and Laura’s classic Converse are a cute, quirky addition to her look.

Street Report: Celine Outside Topshop Unique

It was total insanity at the Topshop Unique show, and we photographers had to squeeze in shots wherever we could—even in the middle of the street! Celine was a trooper, and we both managed to dodge all the FW traffic while documenting her awesome look.

Celine’s daring lace dress is moody and sexy, but she’s toned it down with her Chucks and oversized coat. Leave it to a Swede to pull off that kind of cool balance!
