Our Six Favorite New York Fashion Week Moments from the Spring ’16 Shows

Hear that? It’s the sound of a legion of editors and bloggers stuffing shoes into designer luggage and tucking eye cream into carry-on bags. That’s right: It’s time for New York Fashion Week again. The shows begin February 10; let’s prepare by way of review. (Of course, since spring collections are arriving every day now, you can also review and prepare by shopping!)

Trip into Fall with Creatures of the Wind | Listen Up!

SPACE_logo_BLACK_rgb

While staring at color-changing leaves, we recommend zoning out to this trippy music mix created by Creatures of the Wind–one of the brands we sell in our new SPACE shop, the new venture by our director of creative projects Olivia Kim to showcase emerging and advanced designers.

The mix was used in Creatures of the Wind’s FW 15 runway show last February, where the collection (which we now sell) was inspired by American psychedelic rock.

Our writer Laura Cassidy was on the scene and remarked:

“…the soundtrack was appropriately heavy, droney, and fuzzed-out. Imagine Silver Apples, ‘Seagreen Serenade’ into Captain Beefheart’s ‘Autumn’s Child,’ followed by ‘The Bulblight’ by Rod Freeman and ‘Paix’ by Catherine Ribiero.”

Sounds great except you don’t have to imagine it anymore. Here it is:

And did you know? Laura is back on the scene right now at New York Fashion Week, breaking down 2016 collections. Follow along with her right here.

New York Fashion Week S/S 2016: Creatures of the Wind Crafts a New Language—and New Sneakers

Not to put you on the spot, but how often do you raise your hand and go first? There’s a strategic psychology behind the move, no doubt about it—it suggests confidence, ease and a little bravado. And the thing about Fashion Week schedules is that they are more or less set from season to season. So if you show on Day 1 of NYFW at 12PM—as Creatures of the Wind does—it means you’re among the first to show every time the ready-to-wear collections come around.

Today’s spring ’16 offering from design duo Shane Gabier and Chris Peters, presented just north of Chelsea and just this side of noon, was “an exploration of cycles of time.”

In other words, the perfect way to kick off a month of spring fashion in the middle of an autumnal transition.

SPACE Stories: VETEMENTS, Shrimps and Creatures of the Wind

It’s like our Creative Projects curator and director, Olivia Kimsaid in a recent
interview with the newly rebranded vogue.com:

SPACE is really meant to be a platform to introduce our customers to another aspect of what designer fashion could be, this advanced and emerging designer world.”

No-Show Snow, Creatures of the Wind Goes Psychedelic, Caroline & Olivia, the Best Fashion Week Hair Style and the Best Non-Fashion Week Fashion App

Fashion Week Journal for Thursday February 12

laura_cassidy_the_thread_nordstrom_fashion_week

Color of the day: White—but, thankfully, just the threat of it. New York Fashion Week Day 1 began with predictions of snowfall, and the huddled conversations outside every show were of the “Here we go again order,” but the resigned tone referred to the weather, not the week’s schedule.

But yesterday ended with dry sidewalks, though, so, the score thus far:

THE ELEMENTS: 0, NYFW: 1

NEW! Creatures of the Wind

What’s in a name? For the line Creatures of the Wind, it’s fair to say there’s music up in there.

Design duo Shane Gabier and Christopher Peters could’ve played it straight when they left the School of the Art Institute of Chicago to launch their line in 2008. “Gabier and Peters” has a nice ring to it, but give the original Johnny Mathis version of “Wild is the Wind” a listen. It’s got a certain ring, too—one that works very well as an abstracted, somewhat undercover reference point for the beautifully moody and hauntingly romantic line that we’re psyched to welcome to Nordstrom the Grove, Nordstrom San Francisco Centre, and Nordstrom.com this month.

To celebrate the launch, we talked to Shane Gabier about the music, climate, and concepts of their current Spring collection.
