Welcome to Fashion Bytes, a cheat sheet for your favorite runway designers. From style inspirations to behind-the-scenes scoops, here’s everything worth knowing at Paris Fashion Week Spring 2018.

The brand: Dries Van Noten

The history: In 1986, six fashion graduates from Antwerp’s Royal Academy of Fine Arts drove a rented truck filled with their collections to London Fashion Week. A well-documented chapter in fashion history, that road trip introduced the world to the Antwerp Six, a gang of designers including Ann Demeulemeester and Dries Van Noten who put Belgian style on the map.

Our Designer VPs on Their Favorite Paris Fashion Week Moments

Tricia Smith and Jennifer Wheeler enter the stylish back bar at Daroco looking like they just came off the beach in Saint-Tropez. Well, except that they’re in ankle boots and turtlenecks, trench coats and long sleeves.

The attitude, though—it’s pure relaxed satisfaction. Contented fulfillment. It’s a mood that isn’t necessarily native to this part of Paris Fashion Week. We’re on the tail end of the week and at this stage of the game, buyers and editors tend to be exhausted, a little cranky, and sort of overwhelmed by all the schedule-packed days they’ve just made it through.

But this time has been different. “It’s just been such a consistently good season,” says Tricia, our executive vice president of women’s and designer apparel. And even more than that, she tells me that the entire industry seems to have banded together in a united front. There’s a feeling of camaraderie in the shows and in the streets.

“It’s like everyone really wants to hold each other up,” agrees Jennifer, vice president of women’s designer apparel. From more white bandanas to all kinds of great color, this is how it went down and these are the moments that mattered most.

Dries Van Noten Put Florals on Ice for Paris Fashion Week

Fashion has come to expect a poetic gesture from Dries Van Noten, but Wednesday’s runway presentation was really something special. It was an unseasonably warm and sunny day in Paris, but as soon as we entered the loftlike space, we encountered at least a visual chill: gorgeously rich and natural floral arrangements frozen in ice blocks, melting in a staggered row down the center of the room.

Though the frosted arrangements (the work of cult botanical artist Azuma Makoto) didn’t actually lower the temperature, the allusion was crystal clear. Spring is that magical thing that happens inside of and because of the bitter cold. From the dark of winter come the most beautiful flowers.

Fashion Party People: Nordstrom Designer Preview and Follow-Up Trunk Sale

The earrings, the coats, the pink tweed, the grassy greens. The slinky dresses, the bold silver jewels. The slouchy trousers, the gowns. The shoes!

And not just the ones on the runway, either—the crowd at Designer Preview always brings their own parade (just check out that front row below)—and this past Thursday night on the Seattle waterfront was an ultra-inspiring mix of what’s hot now, what’s hot on the horizon and what’s just hot no matter the season.

Paris Fashion Week: Dries Van Noten, His Friend Iris Apfel and the Italian Eccentric Luisa Casati

“Oh, yes, she and Dries are in love with each other,” said Griet Vandekerckhove, a member of Dries Van Noten‘s Belgian sales team. She was speaking of Iris Apfel, the 94-years-young American interior designer, style icon and documentary film star. Mrs. Apfel had suddenly appeared in the dark, rectangular runway room in the 8th arrondissement just as Jennifer Wheeler, Nordstrom’s VP of designer apparel, and I were talking to Griet about the collection—the perfect coincidence.

Griet says Van Noten was inspired primarily by the eccentric Italian heiress Luisa Casati and her lover, the poet and playwright Gabriele D’Annunzio. But who can think of eccentrics without thinking of Mrs. Apfel—particularly if you’re really good friends with her?

As we watched a collection of extra-textural, overtly decadent metallic and velvet looks come down the runway, we were especially drawn to the Apfel-like accessories, the D’Annunzio-rooted menswear and the wild, animal-print outerwear. For lovers of smart contrast and elegant clashing, fall 2016 is going to be a really, really rich time.

These two BFFs are adorably matched and clearly having fun with fashion. There’s something so refreshing about seeing young girls enjoying fashion unselfconsciously. Lola and Elise have chosen some great prints and colors to liven up the streets of Paris. Elise’s Chloé purse is the It bag of the year and adds a great hit of coordinating color.

Paris Fashion Week S/S 2016: Dries Van Noten’s Opulent New World

In the best possible way, a Dries collection is a Dries collection is a Dries collection. Like Karl and Chanel, he is wonderfully true to a singular vision.

That said, his language and his tools are so deeply rich and vivid that even within that singleminded pursuit, he varies so beautifully that each new season seems brand new. Or maybe it’s that something in you seems new. If you want it to be.

DRIES BLURRY 40S SUNGLASSES

Inside a dark and industrial space down a courtyard alley in the 11th arrondissement of Paris, the spring 2016 collection offered a world where the ’40s and the ’80s—and yes, the ’90s too—were not actual periods of time but rather dreams of places we can visit and revisit whenever the mood is right.

And the mood was very, very right on Wednesday. Check it out.
