Putting the Everyday in Earth Day: Amour Vert’s Sustainable Everyday Basics

Often when we think of innovation in fashion, we think of cutting-edge designs, cool new pop-ups or unexpected collabs. But what about upending the conventional clothing supply chain? It’s rife with energy inefficiencies, pollution issues and even human rights concerns. It’s a serious drain on the environment—from thread production right down to garment manufacturing and distribution. As Earth Day approaches, now’s as good a time as any to discover creative clothing companies that are challenging the unsustainable status quo. Enter Amour Vert.

Amour Vert—French for “green love”—was founded by the wife-husband team of Linda Balti and Cristoph Frehsee, who met in 2007 at a defense industry conference in Abu Dhabi. Cristoph, who’d just sold his landmine-clearing company, convinced Linda, an engineer working on fighter-jet simulators, to take a leap of faith: quit her job in France and backpack around the world. “And at that time we were not engaged. We were just dating,” says Linda. “I was like, ‘That’s a bit crazy, but let’s do it.'”

Nowadays, offices everywhere are touting a ‘business casual’ dress code, but the term itself is vague and means different things in different industries. If you’re confused about whether or not to denim up, you’re not alone. To help a guy out, we’ll explain the basics, but it’s up to you to get final guidance from your friends in HR.

The general gist: business casual is less formal than the traditional three-piece suit and tie but more polished than your average casual-Friday attire (i.e., no sports jerseys). Think of it as balancing out two parts dressy with one part laid-back. Our men’s editorial stylist suggests losing the tie, working a smart pair of jeans into your look or pulling on an unscuffed pair of dress sneakers. The primary objective is to still look professional, but with an effortless, sportswear-leaning vibe—like you could present to the board, then roll up your sleeves and kick back at a BBQ.

Everlane Founder & CEO Michael Preysman on the Concept of Radical Transparency

Once upon a time, a young Michael Preysman graduated from Carnegie Mellon University with a dual degree in computer engineering and economics, trying to reimagine a viable clothing-business model despite having little fashion knowledge. Three years later, at the age of 25, the self-starter launched Everlane with a disrupter’s desire to circumvent the traditional wholesale retail system. His vision was of a brand that would sell well-made, minimalist T-shirts at a fraction of the normal cost—all direct to consumers via a low-overhead digital platform. That was back in 2010, and it was a radical concept at the time.

Today, Everlane sells hundreds of high-quality wearable goods for men and women—from jeans to cashmere sweaters to leather shoes and accessories. (The brand has even partnered with Pop-In@Nordstrom to showcase its products on our site and in several IRL Nordstrom stores.) And it’s embraced an even more radical concept—one Everlane has termed “radical transparency,” which promotes an unconventional openness about almost everything that goes into the production of their products. From fabric sources to factory conditions to transportation and import duty costs—it’s all readily available to the Everlane customer on the company’s site.

We recently caught up with Michael to discuss the brand’s evolution, its recent denim launch and what term is absolutely not in the CEO’s lexicon.

Zella in Your Corner: 3 Basic Boxing Drills to Know Before You Get in the Ring

This October, Zella observes 10 years in the activewear industry. To get into the celebratory swing of things, the Nordstrom-exclusive brand is honoring the occasion with a special capsule collection dedicated to a burgeoning sport with some serious fighting spirit: women’s boxing.

While female competitors have been throwing punches since at least the 18th century, boxing has been largely considered a macho, male-dominated sport for most of its history. Even today, physical aggression is seen as a man’s specialty, despite female fighting phenoms like Claressa Shields and Cecilia Braekhus making regular ESPN headlines. But the world of women’s boxing is only ramping up—and we’re hoping this new collection inspires a few more million-dollar babies out there.

For one, it delivers a full-body workout that tones almost every muscle and incinerates up to 900 calories an hour. (That’s twice as many calories as your average foray on the elliptical machine.) Boxing’s inherently short bursts of extreme cardio are proven to burn more fat than a steady-going cardio session and continue to burn calories post-workout. It’s also incredibly empowering and fun. When you’re punching bags and lifting weights in fast and furious drills, your endorphins are cranked to 11. You’re building strength, honing hand-eye coordination and learning practical self-defense skills. You’re firing on all cylinders, pummeling the day’s stresses away.

Not into human combat? No problem! In fact, most boxing students never step into the ring. Some don’t even spar (when two people practice fighting against each other). It’s a choose-your-own-intensity sport where you control the level of involvement. What matters is you’re getting your heart rate up, working muscles head to toe and managing stress in a healthy way.

Ames Bros x Pearl Jam for Pop-In@Nordstrom x Hanes: A Q&A on Designing Hundreds of Concert Posters and T-Shirts for Seattle’s Longest-Lasting Grunge Band

When it comes to a design aesthetic, it’s hard to imagine what Pearl Jam, Skype and a Seattle-based pizza chain might have in common. But these seemingly disparate entities all share the same potent, just-under-the-radar resource: Ames Bros, a small graphic design firm manned by two pretty unpretentious guys—Coby Schultz and Barry Ament.

The artistic duo has accomplished something a lot of design houses struggle with—a seamless, cohesive style that melds two brains into one. Or at least makes it look that way. Coby and Barry met back in art school at Montana State in the early ’90s, and both moved to Seattle after graduation for career opportunities in illustration. But Ames Bros as it’s known now might never have existed had it not been for Pearl Jam wanting a series of cool screen-printed show posters. Barry’s brother, Jeff Ament (yes, the same one who plays bass in Pearl Jam), hatched the poster project in 1995 and soon Coby joined Barry to kick out a constant stream of one-of-a-kind designs. And voilà, Ames Bros was born.

Nowadays, Coby and Barry cater to a wide range of clientele—from Skype and Pagliacci Pizza to Metallica and the NFL. They even do pro bono work for Food Lifeline and SMooCH (Seattle Musicians for Children’s Hospital). But their 22-year-long relationship with Pearl Jam is still going strong—as an extensive, ever-growing archive of posters and T-shirts can attest. ban.do: The Brand That Just Wants to Have Fun (Creative Mastermind Jen Gotch on Optimism, ban.do Tees for Pop-In and Prop Styling at Nordstrom)

Plausible upcoming scenario: You wake up on the wrong side of the bed on a dark, rainy day. You have no idea what to wear, but you know you and your outfit need an instant mood boost. Then you remember your new ban.do T-shirt you scored at Pop-In@Nordstrom x Hanes. It might be the one touting the rosy mantra ‘No Bad Days’, it might be a big, red heart—or it might be the ‘I Did My Best’ tee (because who among us doesn’t need to be reminded of this too-true self-affirmation?). Whatever your choice of ban.do T-shirt, one look in the mirror after you’ve slipped it on should cue spontaneous rays of sunshine accompanied by a heavenly choir. Or at least help put things into perspective.

And that’s the point of ban.do, the L.A. lifestyle brand whose official tagline insists ‘we are serious about fun.’ Founded by self-proclaimed eternal optimist Jen Gotch, ban.do wants to lock down the positive vibes, no matter what kind of day you’re dealing with.

That kind of branding is rooted in personal relevance for Jen, who sold the company a few years back so she could focus solely on its creative vision. As she puts it, “The interesting thing with building a brand when you don’t set out to build a brand is that things just happen because they’re what you gravitate towards.”

Long Live Your New Tee from Pop-In@Nordstrom x Hanes

It’s cool, collectible and pretty much irreplaceable (at least once our Pop-In stock sells out), so keep it wearable for years to come with a few of these simple laundry tips.

Wash your tee in cold water on gentle cycle whenever possible. (Don’t feel bad if you have to use warmer water occasionally to knock out some stains. That temp spike is legit.)

Skip the dryer and use an indoor drying rack. Heat can cause fading, pilling, shrinking and even sleeve deformities.

Ironing T-shirts, like ironing sheets, is a personal call. (If you dry your tee on a rack, wrinkles should be minimal.) If you have to use an iron, turn the tee inside out and press the iron down, then lift up and press another spot. Moving the iron in circular motions tugs on the fabric, leaving your beloved tee possibly deformed.

Avoid dry-cleaning an embroidered tee—the harsh chemicals can damage the fibers. Instead, turn it inside out, throw it in a mesh laundry bag and wash on cool. Save your cash, save your shirt.
