Helmut Lang’s Shayne Oliver-Designed Collection at New York Fashion Week

In a one-season-only engagement, Shayne Oliver designed the spring/summer 2018 collection for Helmut Lang, the pioneering designer brand. The collection premiered at New York Fashion Week in a runway show billed as Helmut Lang Seen by Shayne Oliver.

The clothes combined Helmut Lang’s strapped-in aesthetic with Oliver’s downtown NYC style, made famous by his recently defunct brand Hood By Air. The show occurred in an emporium filled with heavy-duty scaffolding, lights, speakers and other purely functional décor—and a who’s who of popular music in attendance.

Cruising with Willy Chavarria at New York Fashion Week: Men’s

Willy Chavarria went the Raf Simons route at NYFW:M, deciding to show his spring/summer 2018 collection not in the standard exhibition space, but off-site, out in the city. Chavarria is an exciting designer to watch, and placing his collection, titled “Cruising,” in a leather bar was an inspired choice.

He showed wide-leg pants and voluminous shirts that brought a California sensibility (where he’s from) to New York (where he lives). The careful styling of the environment worked with the clothes, from the lowriders parked out front, to the fragrant flower crosses inside. Relaxing oldies playing on the speakers—music to cruise to, in a place for cruising.

Fashion Week provides an opportuity to get to know different designers and their points of view, and we’re glad we made it out to the Eagle to see what Chavarria had to offer.

Fashion Week SPACE

New York Fashion Week: Hood By Air on the Runway and in the Showroom

To call Hood By Air a cult brand is to call one of their insanely popular streetwear pieces a hoodie. In the present moment, they’re among the two or three brands that define the idea of a cult brand—just like their hoodies all but define the concept of a hoodie. (One might argue—probably quite successfully—that that honor would go instead to Vetements, but we’ll wait until Paris Fashion Week to discuss that.)

All of which is just to say that their show last Sunday during New York Fashion Week felt more like a ceremony than a fashion show. And when we visited the brand’s Lower East Side showroom (inside what appears to be a Chinese restaurant), we found that that’s how they think of it, too. Right down to the fact that it was on Sunday. Come to find out their shows are always on Sundays, and insiders always observe them as ceremonial. This last week, the service was all about coming home. Fall 2016 is postmodern Odyssey.

She’s always dressed to perfection. Shearling is giving fur a run for its money in the coat department, and this particular number is magnific. Together with her bandana neckerchief and elongated-fringe saddle bag, this look has a modern western/naturalist vibe. A sleek mesh shirt, denim flares and snakeskin booties also keep her feeling totally urban and cool at the same time. Aimee, you’re just too good!
