Fashion Bytes: Backstage at kate spade new york at New York Fashion Week

Welcome to Fashion Bytes, a cheat sheet for your favorite runway designers. From style inspirations to behind-the-scenes scoops, here’s everything worth knowing at New York Fashion Week Spring 2018.

The brand: kate spade new york

The history: Your favorite box bag was born in 1993, the brainchild of a former fashion editor named (yes) Kate Spade and her husband, Andy. (They met while working at a menswear shop in Arizona. Adorable.) Home goods, shoes and clothes soon followed, and now the brand even has a film studio, where it makes short (and usually hilarious) videos with female talent like Anna Kendrick, Anna Faris and even Gloria Steinem.

Eyeliner Fit for a Czarina by M·A·C at kate spade new york | Backstage Beauty

A rebellious spirit ran through the beauty at kate spade new york’s show in the Russian Tea Room. Although historic change is often not pretty, the makeup by M·A·C most certainly was. Imbued with a regal air, M·A·C’s fierce eyes and revolutionary red lips seemed defiant and aristocratic—as if to conjure both the royal court and its coup.

The collection was inspired by the brazen female entertainers of the 1920s Louise Brooks and Josephine Baker, and so the show had a performative and Parisian air. M·A·C complemented these women’s independent streaks with cat-eyed stares, while Deborah Lippmann provided ruby nails that sparkled like crown jewels.

Moi Time: A Chat with Miss Piggy, kate spade new york’s Latest “Miss Adventure”

There are few idols from our youth with whom we’re still enamored. Most childhood stars dwindle once adulthood arrives, when our seasoned tastes and collected experience reveal chinks in the gilded armor of celebrity. But Miss Piggy is one for whom our regard has only grown as we’ve grown up.

Frankly, she’s a badass. The professional actress, spokes-pig, karate enthusiast and fashion plate holds her own amid a colorful cast of mostly male Muppets. She is outspoken, brash when circumstances call for it, genteel when the situation is otherwise. Her flair for fashion and her unapologetic femininity and ambition are characteristics that plant her firmly in the modern era, even though she has been in the public eye for four decades.

Miss Piggy.

All this makes her the perfect star for kate spade new york’s latest “Miss Adventure.” We spoke with Miss Piggy about the new collection of accessories, for which she was the muse, her co-star, Zosia Mamet, and how she manages to do it all while including time for romantic entanglements.

First things first. How is your love life? Are you seeing anyone green?

Moi’s love life is fantastique! As for “anyone green,” I can’t imagine what you’re talking about. Oh, you mean, “him” … Well, we’re still friends and colleagues, but for now, I’m done with “A for Amphibians” and I’m working my way through the rest of the alphabet. To put it succinctly, I’m not just seeing anyone … I’m seeing everyone.

Taking their inspiration from kate spade new york’s carefully woven motif of Morocco, M·A·C artists gave the girls backstage a lightly humid glow on their eyelids and lips reminiscent of the balmy nights in the desert country. Spicy blushes and dusting powders contributed to the sensory-rich flavor of the show’s conjured atmosphere.

New York Fashion Week Last Looks: Yesterday’s Runways at Jason Wu, Tanya Taylor, Kate Spade and Rihanna x PUMA

Notorious for flouncy dresses doused in microprints, Jason Wu surprised on Friday by kicking off New York’s Fall Fashion Week with a casually moody collection.Jason_Wu_149_fw16Photos: InDigital

Among the designs we’ve come to expect from Wu, overly long sweater sleeves, curve-hugging knit midi dresses and simplified blown-up prints are not first on the list. Consider yesterday’s collection as the grunge-inspired counterpart to his fall 2015 collection, a sexier and slouchier departure from last season’s luxurious furs and slinky gowns.

Not to say Wu’s signature feminine frill didn’t make an appearance in the form of individually placed plumes loaded on flowing dresses and oversized coats alike. The additional layered lace minis, bleeding floral prints and strappy backless dresses helped balance the masculine trouser and knit combos, ’60s-inspired miniskirt suits and dilated windowpane prints. Standout pieces include a lone brown leather trench (expectedly two sizes too big in design), detachable fur capelets and, of course, his seasonally sought-after bag—this time a shoulder saddle sack in pretty much any material from acid-toned snakeskin and white fur front to foolproof black.

Gifted: Black and White in the City

What’s that they say about cocktail hour—it’s 5 o’clock somewhere? It must be someone’s birthday too, right? Let our Gifted posts point you in the direction of stylish presents all year long.

Inspired by the idea of spring in the city in the era of automats and leaving it all to Beaver and June, we’re feeling like paring it all down—though not at the expense of looking chic and being current, of course. Let’s assume the friends and loved ones in your life are having a similar moment, one where lightweight tote bags are wonderfully catch-all and classic patterns are given purpose and punch.

Fashion Week Street Style

Street Style: Brooke at Dion Lee

There’s an interesting textural trend emerging this week at NYFW: a flirty, feminine skirt paired with a heavy winter sweater or coat and sexy stilettos. Brooke Testoni–blogger extraordinaire–is a great example of this new theme and she manages to make an airy silk skirt look cozy and seasonal. I can’t wait to pull out some of my spring pieces and try this transitional balancing act out for myself!

Street Style: Ella at Jason Wu

Ella Catliff is practically a fixture on The Thread, thanks to her retro-inspired, ladylike style. I love how much Ella embraces color. In a sea of neutrals, this English blogger shines. Her neon coat is textural and bold, and her patterned dress is a cute, youthful pairing. Hot pink accessories enhance the statement color story even more.

Street Style: Jessica Hart at Zimmermann

Aussie model Jessica Hart is always a stunner. Her ladylike look at the Jason Wu show basically caused a photographer stampede. Leave it to a model to make 10 degrees look like a breezy spring day! The full skirt continues to be a hot-ticket item, and this retro metallic style is the perfect transitional piece. A crop top, modern trench, and pointed stilettos complete the look.
