The brand: Burberry

The history: One of the oldest fashion brands in Great Britain, Burberry began in 1856 when a 21-year-old craftsman named Thomas Burberry set up an outerwear shop in Hampshire. By 1879, he’d invented gabardine, a light and waterproof material that made his coats warmer, dryer and better suited to rainy British weather. But it wasn’t until World War I that Burberry’s most famous invention, the trench coat, was born. Though originally issued to military personnel, it became a favorite among British civilians, and turned Burberry into an iconic brand for the UK and, later, the world.

The Best Street Style of London Fashion Week

And just like that, closing time for London Fashion Week has struck on Big Ben’s face. Although it seemed as fleeting as a moment of sunshine in the British capital, LFW packed the street-style punches. To make up for the overcast skies, the fashion fold wore acid-bright colors and sparkly shoes. We were oh-so-pleasantly dazzled.

Here are just some of our favorite looks on the loveliest ladies we’ve been trailing all week—plus their Instagram accounts so we can keep tabs on them as they bounce to the next Fashion Week.

SPACE Favorites from London Fashion Week

“A lot of times what I feel when I’m here watching the shows is that I’m so honored to be in the company of these women—women like Simone, Molly, Ashley,” says Olivia, after we duck into a Mexican restaurant out in the East End. It’s the last day of London Fashion Week, and we’re between appointments, so now’s the time to take stock.

Each season, in every city, there are one or two collections—and a few key pieces and a few key moments—that stand out among the rest. Here are Olivia and Raul’s favorites from London.

Kicking Off SPACE LAB from Fashion Week

The SPACE team‘s fashion week spreadsheet had five new names on it this season: Eric Schlösberg, Eckhaus Latta, Dilara Findikoglu, A.W.A.K.E, and Vejas. Together, they represent our new shop-in-shop, SPACE LAB.

Details from Dilara Findikoglu’s London Fashion Week presentation.

Debuting today in Seattle, Chicago, Los Angeles, Vancouver, Toronto and online, SPACE LAB is a fashion incubator; it’s a way for Olivia and her team to pay special attention to brands that are operating just a little bit outside the lines, and also just breaking their stride. It’s a way to nurture them and stand by them as their careers make important pivots.

And we do mean stand by them: Even though SPACE LAB is set up to stock and mentor five designers at a time for just one season starting this spring, we met with designers during New York and London Fashion Weeks (we’ll catch up with Vejas in Paris in about a week) to see what they’re presenting for next fall.

Seasons are so last year: Burberry’s February collection was on
London’s runway on Monday and is shoppable now. Image via Burberry.

Inspired by multifaceted British artist Henry Moore, the knitwear, trenches and handbags referenced his esoteric use of proportion and scale while classic, traditional workwear pieces—trousers, overalls, jackets—were a nod to artisans everywhere.
