MAC Aaliyah Is Finally Here

Releasing today, at the height of a ’90s comeback, MAC Cosmetics’ latest limited-edition collection has been years in the making. Thanks to the relentless petitioning of adoring fans, R&B icon Aaliyah is finally being honored with a 12-piece edit of lipsticks, eyeshadows and glosses inspired by her very own makeup bag.

The collection is a perfect representation of the ’90s legend’s signature look (including THE satin nude lip from the video for the hit song “Try Again”) and also imagines how her approach to beauty may have evolved in 2018. The contemporary edit transcends time and trends to capture the hearts of Aaliyah fans old and new with her timeless, understated beauty. It is her enduring influence that makes Aaliyah a true icon.

To celebrate the launch, we’re breaking down two of our favorite Aaliyah looks with step-by-step tutorials to achieve her “tomboy ingenue” aesthetic. For best results, apply while jamming to this ’90s powerhouse.

Your Spring Makeup Bag According to Pantone

Spring Fashion Week has long since ended, but we’re still thinking about the cheery pastels and vivacious yellows that we saw on (and off) the runways of New York, London, Milan and Paris. As we poured over Pantone Color Institute’s list of on-trend hues for the spring-summer fashion season, we wondered, how can we incorporate these colors into our beauty too?

Let Pantone’s spring-summer color palette—with soft pinks, punchy reds and cool-toned violets—inspire you to change up your makeup look for the season. Ahead, the lipsticks, eye pencils and highlighters we’re adding to our cosmetics bags for the upcoming warm months.

Each palette comes with eight eyeshadows and a highlighter to create a range of looks, from soft and shimmering to full-on smoky. The formulas are better than ever—and two sets are limited editions. Our editors will tell you which ones they are—and help you pick the palette that fits your style.

You can always count on Marchesa for a display of unadulterated formal femininity. For the shows, the beauty must never compete, but cannot be so subtle as to seem casual next to the evening gowns. To create the stunning hair and makeup that complemented Fall 2017’s Chinese-inspired sheaths, Marchesa turned to Moroccanoil and M·A·C.

Eyeliner Fit for a Czarina by M·A·C at kate spade new york | Backstage Beauty

A rebellious spirit ran through the beauty at kate spade new york’s show in the Russian Tea Room. Although historic change is often not pretty, the makeup by M·A·C most certainly was. Imbued with a regal air, M·A·C’s fierce eyes and revolutionary red lips seemed defiant and aristocratic—as if to conjure both the royal court and its coup.

The collection was inspired by the brazen female entertainers of the 1920s Louise Brooks and Josephine Baker, and so the show had a performative and Parisian air. M·A·C complemented these women’s independent streaks with cat-eyed stares, while Deborah Lippmann provided ruby nails that sparkled like crown jewels.

Two Valentine’s Day Date-Night Looks (One Naughty, One Sweet) from M•A•C Artist Victor Cembellin

Just in time for romance and exclusive to Nordstrom, M•A•C has released four Looks in a Box that provide all the makeup you need to create a completely stunning face—on your already gorgeous canvas.

Each kit contains a lipstick, cream base, mascara, eyeliner, two eyeshadows and a blush. But each prescribes a unique colorway and application process to achieve a distinct style. “These are colors that work harmoniously together,” says senior M•A•C artist Victor Cembellin. “Cosmetics departments can be overstimulating. We wanted to pare that down for somebody who wanted a personal makeup shopper to tell them what they need.”

The looks are titled “Be a Little Naughty,” “Be Sweet & Dreamy,” “Be Cool” and “Be an Original.” In preparation for Valentine’s Day, we asked Victor how to perfectly construct “Be a Little Naughty” and “Be Sweet & Dreamy,” two mood-setting options for date night—one with a matte red lip, the other with a nude lip. He added some extra M•A•C products to really amp up the effect, but both styles can be done with the Look in a Box products alone.

Here are his face charts and step-by-step instructions to get these sex-kitten and angelic looks.

Ceremonial Stares are the Coolest Spring Look from MAC at Tome | Backstage Beauty

If you’ve been itching to try Nigerian-American artist Laolu Senbajo’s body art from Bey’s “Sorry” video, but can’t quite seem to make the intensely emotive paint patterns work for your every day, M•A•C‘s makeup at Tome spring 2017 might be the gateway look. Refreshingly, the unique beauty of women of different ages, sizes and ethnicities was on display during Tome’s show. That continued down to the natural beauty of the models, but with a happy burst of white as an unexpected accent around the eyes. It is almost a visual interpretation of “smizing.” We spotted model Irina Kravchenko on the street still wearing the look, and we couldn’t blame her a bit.

The makeup was inspired by a Dinka (a tribe in the Upper Nile region of South Sudan) ceremonial paint. Lead M•A•C artist Diane Kendal let the models’ individual beauty shine through but added feathery brushstrokes along the sides of the eyes.

Aveda artists followed the tendencies of each woman’s hair, accentuating natural waves, curls and texture with select products.

Tanya Taylor’s Island Holiday, Plus How to Get MAC’s Fresh-From-Vacation Look | Backstage Beauty

Tanya Taylor is feeling refreshed after a spate of vacations this summer that included trips to Capri and Cuba. But these were working vacations. The talented designer always paints her own prints, this time she did so while taking botanical inspiration from her travels. Her intensely textured and artisan-inspired spring 2017 collection not only features these flamboyant florals but also prismatic embroidery, sequins and palm-leaf perforations. While these are clothes that grab attention, they are also just lovely and fun—or how a vacation should be.

M•A•C makeup artists furthered the holiday theme of Tanya Taylor’s collection by creating dreamy, beach beauty with luxurious skin and a flushed cheek using palettes from their Spring ’17 Trend Forecast collection. Even if you can’t take off to a tropical island now, you can look like you just returned from sunning with this simple makeup how-to.
