Runway Rundown: Opening Ceremony

Antwerp, Belgium: home of the diamond district, legendary painters, and decadent architecture—and now the inspiration for Opening Ceremony‘s fall collection.

Creative directors Humberto Leon and Carol Lim paid a trip to the port city recently, and their interpretation appears to be largely graphic and futuristic—familiar concepts for the boundary-pushing brand.

We appreciated the tribute to Belgian chocolate, which literally dripped down the wall behind the runway.

Runway Rundown: Band of Outsiders

Illusion played a big part in creative director Scott Sternberg’s fall 2014 presentation for Band of Outsiders, which celebrated its 10th year in January. From faux toggles on a raincoat to silhouetted eyelashes on a black sweater, trompe l’oeil details gave the collection a clever, playful vibe.

But it wasn’t all cheeky — Sternberg cited historical fashion icons Elsa Schiaparelli and Lee Miller as inspiration. This materialized in long black gloves, fur collars and ’40s silhouettes.

Runway Rundown: Yigal Azrouël

It’s not every day that a designer’s collection makes one think “Ooh, cozy!” and “Ooh, austere!” simultaneously. But Yigal Azrouël achieved precisely that today, displaying a mélange of supersoft mohair sweaters and coats alongside strict black dress that reached as far up the neck as they did down the ankles. The Yigal girl need not fear next winter’s windchills.

Azrouël also added some of his signature edgy details to the mix with patchwork-style prints, sheer paneling and zipper accents.

Runway Rundown: Alexander Wang

The phrase “urban warrior” gets bandied around quite a bit in the fashion world as many of the industry’s edgier brands tend toward a gritty, industrial look. But last night in Brooklyn’s Navy Yard, Alexander Wang showed what might be the definitive take on city survivalism. Models stormed the runway wearing thick sweaters, oversized utility coats, leather dickies and shield-like boots. Jolts of bright color kept the collection optimistic and lively, in addition to playful laser-cut paisley jackets and zig-zag dresses.

Join Alexander Wang in showing your support for the Principle 6 campaign, which protests LGBT discrimination at the 2014 Sochi Winter Olympics, with his ‘P6’ cashmere beanie designed in partnership with Athlete Ally.

Runway Rundown: Prabal Gurung

Notorious prankster Vitalii Sediuk streaked across the stage at the Prabal Gurung show this afternoon, but ultimately failed to steal the spotlight, which was firmly planted on the designer’s bold new collection. Gurung revealed a sleek, innovative offering for fall, replete with asymmetrical hemlines, nubby, oversized sweaters and rich, autumnal hues. We love the intricate beadwork in his eveningwear juxtaposed against soft, draped fabrics and unruly feathers.

Runway Rundown: Helmut Lang

Helmut Lang creative directors Michael and Nicole Colovos never fail to deliver a clean, minimal aesthetic, keeping things fresh with unique textures like draped leather, tulle insets and fur. This season proved not only a study in monochromatic dressing—the all-red ensemble being particularly bold—but also an exploration of graphic, abstract prints.

Runway Rundown: Jason Wu

Nineties throwbacks got a modern update at the Jason Wu fall 2014 show this afternoon—think slinky slipdresses, velvet skirts and bulky boyfriend coats. Any hint of grunge sloppiness was decidedly absent, however, as each look was polished to perfection.

Runway Rundown: BCBGMAXAZRIA

HERO

A sea of graphic stripes, oversized silhouettes and furry details sailed down the runway at the decadent BCBGMAXAZRIA fall show this morning. The mixed-media coats were especially striking, combining leather, fur and wool. With freezing temperatures in much of the country right now, warm outerwear is certainly a welcome sight.
