Menswear Icon Nick Wooster on Sneakers, Style and What Every Man Should Have in His Closet

Mr. Nick Wooster has been called an Internet superhero and the “alpha male of American street style.” Some fans even call him Woost God. He’s got upward of half a million followers on Instagram, and photographers hound him at Fashion Week and Pitti Uomo. It’s safe to say he knows a thing or two about style.

Mr. Wooster can also boast (if he were so inclined) 30 years of experience as a fashion director and creative consultant at highbrow retailers around the world. So it’s safe to say he knows a thing or two about luxury.

Which is why his new collaboration with Brooklyn-based sneaker company GREATS is so exciting. From luxurious Italian craftsmanship to Instagram-worthy designs, these bold, playful shoes are made to be enjoyed. We caught up with him between promotional appearances for the Nick Wooster x GREATS collection to ask him a few questions about shoes, style and what every man needs in his closet.

Asking for a Friend: How to Do Business Casual with 3 Key Pieces

‘Asking for a Friend’ is our style advice series.

Nowadays, offices everywhere are touting a ‘business casual’ dress code, but the term itself is vague and means different things in different industries. If you’re confused about whether or not to denim up, you’re not alone. To help a guy out, we’ll explain the basics, but it’s up to you to get final guidance from your friends in HR.

The general gist: business casual is less formal than the traditional three-piece suit and tie but more polished than your average casual-Friday attire (i.e., no sports jerseys). Think of it as balancing out two parts dressy with one part laid-back. Our men’s editorial stylist suggests losing the tie, working a smart pair of jeans into your look or pulling on an unscuffed pair of dress sneakers. The primary objective is to still look professional, but with an effortless, sportswear-leaning vibe—like you could present to the board, then roll up your sleeves and kick back at a BBQ.

Because the days are getting longer and warmer, we’ll show you the lighter side of business casual. Ahead, three solid staples to work into your spring/summer workwear wardrobe.

Native Shoes’ Mesmerizing Nature Video About…Nothing

If you’ve not heard of Native Shoes, it’s a Canadian brand specializing in fashionable vegan shoes, mostly made from featherweight EVA. They excel in their lane and have a few styles that are perfect for the current change of seasons.

To promote their Monaco style—a clean, water-repellent sneaker—Native made a video that we’ve watched too many times to justify. Created by Madbury Club, it is both entertaining and pretty much about nothing. It vaguely reminds us of this classic Spike Jonze-directed skateboard clip.

Watch the ad above. And on the related topic of ads that sort of aren’t, check out Native Shoes’ excellent editorial publication, Native Tongue, after the jump.

The Weekend Guide: April 8-10

Logan Marshall-Green in The InvitationSEE: The Invitation
Our imaginations and paranoias are often more horrific than any boogeyman. This seems the premise of Karyn Kusama’s newest film. Set at a Hollywood Hills dinner party, The Invitation causes us to question whether Will’s (Logan Marshall-Green) ex-wife and her new husband are hiding something behind their serene hospitality or whether we are yoked to an increasingly troubled protagonist. The chills derive from the subtle uncertainty sown in their interactions.

HEAR: Sept. 5th by dvsn
Pronounced “division,” this R&B duo on Drake’s OVO Sound label received a warm, lingering embrace from the music community for their sparse but sultry jams. Echoing rhythms lay the groundwork for a careful crescendo of sound and emotion on songs like “Hallucinations.” Ultimately the seduction of their music rests on its ability to retreat into the background or command attention, depending on one’s mood.

Love Streams by Tim Hecker
Working with Oscar-winning Icelandic composer Jóhann Jóhannsson, veteran electric musician Tim Hecker created a delicate album featuring the sounds of an Icelandic choir, a harpsichord, bass clarinets, strings and electric guitars along with his usual boards and mixers. It’s a pastiche of orchestration, resembling church choral compositions, suitable to a digital age when novelty can derive from our nostalgia.

Ology by Gallant
The debut of another emerging alt-R&B act, Gallant, eviscerates with so many feelings, from the frustrated hopelessness beautifully rendered on “Bourbon” to the bargain striking of “Bone + Tissue.” Gallant’s “Weight in Gold” rightly gained acclaim and some popularity. This collection of new tracks will doubtlessly grant more airtime for his mesmerizing vocal range and to air his fuzzy emotions.

Canvas Sneakers for Spring: Scuffing Season

canvas

Here’s a thing: we understand having a healthy obsession with cleaning one’s sneakers. It’s always satisfying to brush Jason Markk premium shoe cleaner on a midsole and watch it come back to life. But we’re also of the opinion that some shoes look great dirty.

Canvas sneakers fall in that category. Don’t worry if they’re scuffed. That’s life. Make them part of your spring rotation with ripped jeans and an optional bomber jacket. You will look good.

Here are five canvas sneakers for your consideration which we believe look excellent (dare we say better than new?) with wear.
