I Love the ’90s | Fashion Week Beauty Trends

Photos by Indigital Images

To the tune of George Michael’s “Freedom! ’90,” Carla Bruni, Claudia Schiffer, Naomi Campbell, Cindy Crawford and Helena Christensen closed the Versace show in Milan, statuesque in sparkling gold dresses. The return of the 1990s supermodels spread like wildfire through Instagram.

On the 20th anniversary of her brother’s death, Donatella, standing arm in arm with her muses, paid tribute to the groundbreaking work of the late Gianni Versace. Featuring prints and designs he created, the show was alive with the spirit of Gianni’s most influential decade and reaffirmed the trend we’ve seen throughout the season: the ’90s are back in a major way.

From brown lipliner to sleek blowouts, see how the decade’s glamazon beauty permeated Fashion Month. Plus, shop these products to create your own original super look.

What Olivia Kim Wore to the Comme des Garçons-Themed Met Gala

“I have a very zen approach,” said Olivia Kim on her way to the Met Gala last night. “What’s meant to fit, work and come together, will.” New goal: May all be as cool-headed and easygoing before big events.

All of fashion—and many bold names from art, design and media—were at the Metropolitan Museum of Art in New York City to honor one of the industry’s most brilliant minds: Rei Kawakubo of Comme des Garçons. But that’s our Olivia, taking it all in stride. The look tonight just feels very me. That’s the best way to explain it.”

“In celebration of our hero Rei Kawakubo, Spy and I are both donning very conceptual thing-a-ma-jigs,” Olivia wrote on Instagram, with a similar image. “Mine is black crinoline tulle and his is clear plexi.”

“I’ve been wearing Comme since I was in high school,” explained our VP of Creative Projects. “So it’s full circle in a sense. When I first started thinking about it, honestly I was thinking, ‘I wear Comme des Garçons almost every day—how can I wear it in a way that feels special enough for the Met Gala?'”

The solution? To go deep with it, and remain abstract about it at the very same time. How very Rei of her.

Visiting Louis Vuitton Headquarters in Paris to Congratulate the LVMH Nominees

With that other awards show behind us, it’s time to turn our eyes toward this year’s LVMH Prize. Kicked off in 2013 by the Louis Vuitton Foundation as the global fashion world’s blue ribbon tournament, the prize is chosen by a jury featuring some of our favorite designers—Marc Jacobs, Humberto Leon and Carol Lim of Kenzo and Opening Ceremony, Phoebe Philo of Céline—and the list of past finalists and winners includes SPACE designers Vejas Kruszewski, Marques’Almeida, and Simon Jacquemus.

Each March, just as everyone in the entire industry is in Paris for Fashion Week, the semifinalists are announced and an open house with the short-listed designers is held at Louis Vuitton’s main digs. We visited today to meet the crew and congratulate two SPACE designers for getting at least this close to the grand prize.

SPACE Favorites from London Fashion Week

“A lot of times what I feel when I’m here watching the shows is that I’m so honored to be in the company of these women—women like Simone, Molly, Ashley,” says Olivia, after we duck into a Mexican restaurant out in the East End. It’s the last day of London Fashion Week, and we’re between appointments, so now’s the time to take stock.

Each season, in every city, there are one or two collections—and a few key pieces and a few key moments—that stand out among the rest. Here are Olivia and Raul’s favorites from London.

SPACE Brand Molly Goddard Returns to Teenage Club Years, Brings Individuality Home

“I guess I was feeling quite nostalgic for my teenage years,” Molly Goddard tells me. We’re upstairs in one of the oldest pubs in SoHo, the neighborhood in which she spent those years—or at least the Friday and Saturday nights.

“Every Friday night I would make myself a new dress and we’d go out to the clubs. We all looked really different, but we were all quite dressed up,” she remembers. “We customized everything back then.”

But her packed and highly anticipated show on Saturday night was not a retro rave or a throwback thing. It definitely had a club vibe, and it nodded once or twice to that late ’90s/early ’00s era, but the real reference, the truth to how those weekend memories came through, is a much subtler one.
