Shopping the MSGM Showroom with Our Buyers

Milan is a long way from the Pacific Northwest, but MSGM creative director Massimo Giorgetti totally “went there” for fall ’17. Based on Twin Peaks (which took place in the aforementioned grunge-adjacent neck of the woods), next season’s collection is dark and moody—but shot through with acid tones, floral details and college references that tie into the iconic show and movies.

About six seasons ago, Nordstrom was the first American retailer to pick up the ruffled, sporty line, and vice president of women’s merchandise Laura Janney and via C buyer Joyce Lin have been loving the brand’s novelty factor ever since. From feminine dresses to bright sweatshirts they run the gamut, and, no matter what, the vibe is always more color, more patches, more stripes, more flair.

Given this collection’s glammed-up yet psuedo-serious ’90s vibe, Sunday morning’s Paris Fashion Week challenge is already pretty tricky. How to choose from all those statement-making tops and all that bold attitude? And because they already selected lots of looks from Massimo’s pre-collection, which was shown to buyers a few months ago and will arrive in stores ahead of regular-season looks, their job is even harder. Joyce needs to take in about 100 silhouettes and even more fabrication options, but she can only pick 10 pieces for our stores and online.

Last Looks: Yesterday’s Runways at Marni, Dolce&Gabbana, MSGM and Missoni

With a vision of modern romanticism, Marni’s Consuelo Castiglioni played with proportion and curvature for the eclectic Italian brand’s fall collection.Marni_149_fw16

Only the Italian designer could translate stirrup pants into something trendy, adding thick waistbands with oversized buttons and pairing them with ballooning sleeves, innovative capes and cutaway layers. Castiglioni’s conceptual eye for combining luxury and simplicity resulted in stiff and structural fabrics molded into rounded shoulders, voluminous cinched sleeves and new-wave cutouts. Sporty knits and ski pants are likely street-style contenders, while we’re hoping the abstract embroidered tweed power suits are the next big thing in office wear.

Last Looks: Yesterday’s Runway at Missoni, Marni and MSGM

When it comes to feel-good vibes, Angela Missoni doesn’t mess around. Her spring lineup buzzed with a healthy optimism, as only sporty silhouettes drenched in colorful zigzags and stripes can exude. If it felt like we were all heading to the beach, it was likely intended. In addition to the knitwear norms—long, flowy caftans, cardigans and dresses—you’d expect from Missoni, there were plenty of two-piece ensembles meant to resemble yarn-spun swimwear, even if just for boardwalk aperitifs. (The collection’s two indisputable bikinis were, however, designed for watersports.)

Yet despite the daring baring of skin, the slinky hot pants and crop tops seemed like natural counterweights to the generous array of sweeping cardigans, palazzo pants and oversized polo shirts. In other words, a little bit of lean tempered a lot of volume.

Street Report: Eva Outside Veronique Leroy

Eva Chen is so cute; I can’t even handle it! It’s been so fun watching her style evolve along with her pregnancy. She’s been a trooper throughout the insanely grueling Fashion Week schedule, but still manages to stay upbeat. This belted coat is an incredible statement piece, and I love the way Eva styled it with oxfords and a simple turtleneck. A modern cut and artsy print are definitely what I’m looking for in a coat this season.

Crystal Nicodemus

Milan Fashion Week: September 21

Highlights from yesterday’s shows: textural details–some subtle, some not–reigned supreme at Marni, MSGM and Salvatore Ferragamo.

Marni Spring 2015

At Marni, the show opened with muted looks like a minimalist top and flowy pants cut from crinkled off-white fabric and cinched with a sweater-knit judo belt for a splash of contrast.

Runway Rundown: MSGM

MSGM Fall 2014If there’s such a thing as youthful clothing for grown-ups, then MSGM creative director Massimo Giorgetti has it down to a science. His fall 2014 collection, unveiled at Milan Fashion Week, introduced a bevy of colorful new prints, easy silhouettes and flashy fabrics, all of which are now hallmarks of the six-year-old brand. It’s hard to imagine these clothes putting you in anything other than a happy mood, which is probably why they’re favored by city-chic party girls.

Street Report: Kerry at Peter Som

I want Kerry’s entire outfit right now! This is one chic, modern look that I can’t wait to replicate. Kerry is an editor at Harper’s Bazaar, so she gets the first look at designer trends. The crop top is still dominating the street scene and this sleek white set is perfection. I told Kerry I would spill coffee on myself immediately if I wore white, but she laughed and said that’s what the belted maxi coat is for!

Street Report: Joanna Hillman at 3.1 Phillip Lim

Joanna Hillman is a personal fashion icon for me (and no stranger to The Thread). She exudes urban sophistication and manages to mold current trends to her own taste. I’m not sure that I ever manage to achieve her level of cool, but I like to try!

Today, she is rocking a modern sporty look—with a hint of racing blue and graphic checks. Thanks for the continued inspiration, Ms. H!
