KBEAUTY School with Christine Chang and Sarah Lee from Glow Recipe | Pop-In@Nordstrom: KBEAUTY

glow

To help you discover the best KBEAUTY routine for your individual needs, we consulted experts Christine Chang and Sarah Lee of Glow Recipe. First, here’s what they had to say about Korean beauty in general:

“Korean beauty is all about layering, learning and customizing to suit your skin care needs. The layering of targeted, skin type–optimized treatments is the cornerstone of KBEAUTY … and the ideal of glowing, radiant skin! And it’s not just about products—the application and enjoyment of uniquely sensorial textures are just as much a part of the Korean beauty routine as a great treatment.”

The basic routine:

Now here’s their advice, broken down by skin concerns including acne and oil, dryness and sensitivity, anti-aging care, and dullness.

Unmistakably Korean Materials | Pop-In@Nordstrom x Gentle Monster

The 2017 series of Pop-Ins at Nordstrom begins with three shops featuring the exciting cultures of Korean fashion and style, curated by Olivia Kim. To start: Gentle Monster, the youthful Korean sunglasses company with a penchant for artistic storytelling.

Beyond making fantastic sunglasses, a big part of the Gentle Monster brand is creative store design. You don’t just inhabit a Gentle Monster retail zone, you get a rich offline experience. We knew they’d do something special for our Pop-In Shops—and they did.

We went straight to the source to learn more, asking Renee Kim, Gentle Monster Associate Space Designer, about the seemingly somber concept behind our joint shops and the meanings behind the Korean materials she used.

At the #Wangsquad Core: Hanne Gaby Odiele & John Swiatek | Pop-In@Nordstrom x Alexander Wang

squad1

During our editorial photo shoot for this Pop-In shop, we got to know supermodel Hanne Gaby Odiele and her then-fiancé John Swiatek (not a model, so he says). Both are core #wangsquad members, and, like everyone we worked with on Wang’s team, were super friendly and down-to-earth. They seemed a lot like us, except a few weeks later, their marriage ceremony was covered in Vogue.

As Hanne and John got their hair and makeup done, this is what they had to say about castles, Lil Wayne, skateboarding and having too much fun while working with their friend Alex.

Alexander Wang’s Priors: Looks From 2007-2016 | Pop-In@Nordstrom Alexander Wang

One way to appreciate the depth and breadth of what Alexander Wang has brought to the fashion game is to look at images from past runway shows.

running_03

Way back in 2007, Joanna Rodger of Vogue praised his “combination of eighties hip-hop and seventies Parisian chic, channeling Run-D.M.C. and YSL simultaneously.” The fall/winter 2016 collection, available at our Pop-In shop, was deemed “slightly profane” and “a whole lot of fun” by Alyssa Vingan Klein for Fashionista. Here’s a look back at Wang, then to now.

Alexander Wang x Olivia Kim Q&A | Pop-In@Nordstrom x Alexander Wang

qandapolaroid

Our own Olivia Kim and Alexander Wang go way back to 2006, when Olivia was the buyer at Opening Ceremony. Wang came through the door with a rolling garment bag, trying to sell some sweaters like a young rapper hustling a demo tape. The next year he crashed the fashion establishment, commencing his ongoing run of spectacular runway shows and game-changing designs.

On the phone – Olivia in Seattle at her office; Alex at his studio in NYC – the two caught up about business, nightlife and approaching fashion as 360-degree storytelling.

A Deeper Look at Creative Growth x Vans’ Artist Edition Sneakers | Pop-In@Nordstrom x Vans

08.00.16_Vans_Editorial_CreativeGrowth_03

We are continually inspired by Creative Growth, the Oakland nonprofit arts center for adults with disabilities, and have built a relationship with the organization going back to our 2014 Tomorrow Together shop.

Last April, Olivia was back at C. She saw artists prepping apparel for the annual CG fashion show fundraiser. Some artists were decorating shoes. That was an a-ha moment for Olivia, who was planning our Pop-In@Nordstrom x Vans shop at the time.

Now lo and behold we have an exclusive collection of custom Vans designed by CG artists, each pair a one-of-one, available online and in limited quantities in-store at our San Francisco, Seattle and Bellevue locations.

See a selection of our styles below and read stories from Jennifer Strate O’Neal, CG’s
partnerships and communications manager, about four specific pairs of Creative Growth-designed Vans.

Off the Wall and Back in Time: Q&A with Vans’ Steve Van Doren | Pop-In@Nordstrom x Vans

For a big-picture view of Vans during our monthlong Vans-focused Pop-In shop, we chatted with Steve Van Doren, son of Paul Van Doren, founder of what began as the Van Doren Rubber Company in 1966. Steve is now Vans’ vice president of events and promotions and a lifelong Vans expert.

We talked to Mr. Van Doren about the day his dad doodled the famous “jazz stripe” which now adorns classic models like the Old-Skool and Sk8-Hi, the confluence of Vans and music (rock, rap and other)–and how, massive though it has become, Vans is still very much a family affair.

Pop-In@Nordstrom x Vans Exclusive Apparel Collection Lookbook | Pop-In@Nordstrom x Vans

lookbook1

For Pop-In@Nordstrom x Vans we partnered with Vans for an exclusive apparel collection for women and men, loosely based on the colors of our sneaker selection. We love the result and hope you do, too. In fact we were so impressed during the prototype-vetting process and seeing the finished products, we got Vans’ designer Vince Martinez on the horn to ask him about the collection piece by piece.

For this project, I was told it was a Pop-In Shop, which I was familiar with, so I got excited to do something extra creative. There weren’t strict parameters, just to tie back to the footwear and bring the design to life. It wasn’t a free-for-all, but I was allowed to do what I do. Usually I’m told, “Here’s your budget.” And I work with that. For this, there was no budget. I was like, OK, I’m just going to take everything to the next level: use the most expensive fabrics, work with the factories, make sure the hand-feel is good. All those things that I normally do, but I was able to give a lot more pushback.
