During our editorial photo shoot for this Pop-In shop, we got to know supermodel Hanne Gaby Odiele and her then-fiancé John Swiatek (not a model, so he says). Both are core #wangsquad members, and, like everyone we worked with on Wang’s team, were super friendly and down-to-earth. They seemed a lot like us, except a few weeks later, their marriage ceremony was covered in Vogue.
As Hanne and John got their hair and makeup done, this is what they had to say about castles, Lil Wayne, skateboarding and having too much fun while working with their friend Alex.
One way to appreciate the depth and breadth of what Alexander Wang has brought to the fashion game is to look at images from past runway shows.
Way back in 2007, Joanna Rodger of Vogue praised his “combination of eighties hip-hop and seventies Parisian chic, channeling Run-D.M.C. and YSL simultaneously.” The fall/winter 2016 collection, available at our Pop-In shop, was deemed “slightly profane” and “a whole lot of fun” by Alyssa Vingan Klein for Fashionista. Here’s a look back at Wang, then to now.

We caught up with the Belgium-born model on Saturday afternoon at her agency, where we traded a few questions and answers before she headed to Manhattan’s Pier 54 for the big show.
Our own Olivia Kim and Alexander Wang go way back to 2006, when Olivia was the buyer at Opening Ceremony. Wang came through the door with a rolling garment bag, trying to sell some sweaters like a young rapper hustling a demo tape. The next year he crashed the fashion establishment, commencing his ongoing run of spectacular runway shows and game-changing designs.
On the phone – Olivia in Seattle at her office; Alex at his studio in NYC – the two caught up about business, nightlife and approaching fashion as 360-degree storytelling.
