Ten SPACE Favorites from Paris Fashion Week

Rolling around Paris for a week or so with Olivia Kim and SPACE buyer Raul Becerra is kind of like an advanced fashion version of National Lampoon’s European Vacation. Especially the part where the Griswold family circles the Eiffel Tower and Clark (played in our version by Olivia) tries passionately to squeeze all the relevant points of interest into that one lap.

You can’t go to Paris without making your own Griswold joke at some point, but Fashion Week really is about making the most of every moment you get with each and every icon you get near—whether it’s a national monument, Grace Coddington or Simon Jacquemus.

On the last day of the fall shows, we look back at ten things that mattered most to us, from Comme des Garçons to Y/Project—complete with theme song and more.

SPACE Favorites from London Fashion Week

“A lot of times what I feel when I’m here watching the shows is that I’m so honored to be in the company of these women—women like Simone, Molly, Ashley,” says Olivia, after we duck into a Mexican restaurant out in the East End. It’s the last day of London Fashion Week, and we’re between appointments, so now’s the time to take stock.

Each season, in every city, there are one or two collections—and a few key pieces and a few key moments—that stand out among the rest. Here are Olivia and Raul’s favorites from London.

Olivia Kim Runs the World—with Nordstrom x Nike

We’ve said it before and we’ll say it again, Olivia Kim will run your town. Her fitness-first dedication is admirable no matter what, but when you understand just how very, very much she travels, it’s downright humbling. Put it this way: when people ask her where she lives, she just sort of laughs. Yet no matter where she goes, she laces up her Nikes and moves.

Running, hiking, yoga, surfing—it’s all a way of life for our VP of Creative Projects, so the recent launch of Nordstrom x Nike boutiques in Toronto and Seattle (Chicago, we’re coming soon) are very close to her heart. She curated them; she believes in them; she shops them. For example, when it came time for her and her crew to take a break from Paris Fashion Week for We Run Paris, a Nike 10K, they did it in Nordstrom x Nike

While we’re all about that sneakers-with-skirts and sweats-with-ankle-boots life, there’s certainly something to be said for the straightforward and traditional use of trainers and leggings too. We also think it’s pretty much impossible not to be inspired by Olivia’s “Why I Run” feature on Nike.com and our images of the gang crossing the Seine in those chic swooshes.

Anthony Vaccarello Debuts at Saint Laurent with Killer Shoes and an Edgy, Polished Vibe

Before Anthony Vaccarello was Anthony Vaccarello of Saint Laurent—back when he had his own private label and was part of the mix of emerging designers inside SPACE—we asked him what one word would describe his always-party-ready, dance-til-dawn looks.

His answer? Sharp.

On Tuesday, inside the shell of postindustrial grandeur, the Italian-Belgian designer debuted as Anthony Vaccarello of Saint Laurent Paris by sending out an army of sharply dressed babes who were ready for any party—and the world.

Looking at Trends So Far with Olivia Kim and SPACE Brands Roksanda & Christopher Kane

As our sleek black van pulled away from Roksanda‘s Monday morning London Fashion Week presentation, Olivia Kim did something I don’t always see her do; she took out a notebook and pen and started writing.

I asked her what she was up to, and she said she wanted to better track what she was seeing, in real time, this season. To help you better track what you’ve been seeing, we’re looking at the Roksanda show alongside Christopher Kane, which we saw later that same day. Because, as it turns out, those two otherwise-unrelated SPACE brands provide good context for how spring ’17 is shaping up.

What Our SPACE Buyer Is Bringing to London Fashion Week

There are a couple colleagues we rely on to clue us in to the hottest trends and tastes. Raul Becerra happens to be foremost among them. As a Nordstrom buyer, he uncovers up-and-coming fashions for SPACE, our emerging designer boutique. We’ve gone along with him to showrooms in the past, and it’s always a treat to get his take on why something is unbelievably cool—call us copiers, but we think his enthusiasm is just contagious.

Before he set off to London to scout new talent in the showrooms, we asked him what he’ll be packing. It’s possible that you might spot us in a few of his picks too.

Paris Fashion Week: What Band Inspired this Acne Studios Runway Video and Informed Our Showroom Visit

I noticed after about half an hour inside the Acne Studios showroom with the SPACE buying team that they were playing a decent selection of songs from the ’70s-era legendary American garage band The Cramps. When I had the chance to ask the brand’s team what informed the fall 2016 collection, I was told matter-of-factly that the designers were indeed thinking about the band’s Poison Ivy and Lux Interior, and filtering what they called ‘Acne archetypes’ through the iconic lead couple’s often gilded and outré but always streetwise style.

London Fashion Week: The Four Things You Don’t Know You Need for Fall from SPACE Brand TOGA

We’re into TOGA designer Yasuko Furuta’s methodology: Chaos. It works for today, for the post-modern cut-and-paste life. If that describes the way you’re living, listen up. Furuta’s plans for Fall 2016 include some key pieces you couldn’t possibly have yet, because until right before the Tokyo-based designer’s Tuesday runway show, they hadn’t been invented.

London Fashion Week: Behind the Scenes with Simone Rocha and the SPACE Team

Everyone and anyone in fashion right now will tell you that in terms of designers in their ascendancy, Simone Rocha is the one to know. Although, as we’ve written before, she actually does come from a venerated fashion family, spiritually and metaphorically it would seem that she’s the daughter of two of the industry’s most legendary women: Coco Chanel and Rei Kawakubo. The tweeds, the knits, the undone finishing, the pearls, the proportions, the elegance, the rebellion. The elegance.

Her runway show last Saturday night was true poetry: an exploration of keeping it all together, and allowing it to sometimes fall apart. As Simone shared with us in this exclusive feature interview, maternity is a key theme in all her work, but now that the 29-year-old is a mother herself, that reference is all the more personal.

Our relationship with the house of Simone Rocha is an intimate one as well. Two days after the show, Nordstrom Vice President of Creative Projects Olivia Kim, along with her buying team, visited the brand’s North London showroom to begin selecting the looks that will hallmark our fall season. This photo journal takes you along—behind the scenes, up-close and very personal.

New York Fashion Week: New for Fall SPACE Brand Simon Miller Might Be the Perfect Non-Denim Denim Brand

Daniel Corrigan never meant to start a denim line. The Seattle-area native was a fine arts student who got his hands on some Japanese denim and … things sort of took off from there. At first, back in 2007 or so, he started Simon Miller doing men’s only, but eventually, after meeting Chelsea Hansford, who had worked at Opening Ceremony back in the day with Olivia Kim, he found himself in the middle of a full coed, bicoastal (he’s in LA, she’s in NY) ready-to-wear line with CFDA approval and all kinds of industry love.

Fall 2016 is the friends’ third full collection of organic cotton, baby alpaca, the softest leather and denim made-in-America pieces, and as beautiful as their Chinatown showroom was this past Thursday, you really do have to touch, feel and experience these styles in person.
