Savvy Summer Mobile Tour: Off the Grid in SF

The Savvy Summer Mobile Tour is back! After an amazing time at Lollapalooza, we kept things rolling this past weekend when we hit up Off the Grid—a Bay Area-based roaming food extravaganza that was too delicious to pass up.

However, eating our weight in Cholita Linda tacos (or yummy gua bao!) wasn’t all we were there to do.

We opened the doors of our tricked-out VW bus and trailer and set up shop doling out in-store discounts, giving away swag bags and selling cool Savvy styles, including exclusive merch from our Aussie pals at MINKPINK .

Plus, we set up a little DIY corner, where ladies could channel their inner craft queens and create boho-cool floral crowns.

Check out Kara Destrenpe, from Nordstrom San Francisco Centre, as she demonstrates her creative process while sporting flowy printed pants, like these WAYF wide-leg pants.

MINKPINK rep Karly Shoemaker places a blooming band atop the head of Savvy-loving cutie Shaila Patel from the nearby coastal town of Pacifica.

From left to right: Mallory Harper & Kara Destrenpe (Nordstrom San Francisco Centre); Lily Wyckoff & Brandy Malcolm-Kerr (Nordstrom Social Media & Marketing teams, respectively).

We also brought our best end-of-summer style game to the City by the Bay, with bold printed pieces that ranged from this striped MINKPINK dress to psychedelic paisley to a bold floral skirt.

Thanks to Mallory, Clinton and Kara from our San Francisco Centre store for helping out!

Although it saddens us to say it, summer is coming to a close and so is the Savvy Mobile Tour. We’re hitching up and heading back to Chicago for one last stop at the Randolph Street Market on 8/24 and 8/25. We really hope to see you there and send a great big MWAH (that’s a kissing noise) to everyone who stopped by while we were tooling around. It was super cool to meet you all!

Talking Savvy: Top Trend Tough Couture

Check out regular posts from Sarah Hendren, our super-stylish Savvy buyer, as she fills us in on all things Savvy—from the hottest trends to the bands she’s loving right now to dreamy vacation spots you might not know about.

Get this look: Left | Right

Even though we’re not quite ready for summer to end, fall is just around the corner, and there’s nothing more exciting to the fashion-loving Savvy crew as getting new gear for the season. One of our favorite trends for fall is Tough Couture. It combines a high-fashion, runway-inspired aesthetic with the grit of street style. It’s clean and precise with a little bit of off-kilter cool. But the best way to show you what this trend is all about is to style out some looks, so we asked our Savvy buyer, Sarah, to put a few together.

“Anything leather—or faux leather, in the case of these pants from Piper—is massive for fall. These pants are also surprisingly versatile. I love pairing them with this cozy-yet-modern sweater from Tildon. Rock a great clutch or handbag, and you’re ready for Sunday morning brunch (and mimosas!) with friends.”

“Next up: a night out on the town! A loose tee adds street-style cred to this formfitting Leith skirt. Add a faux-leather vest and chunky necklace for some some edge. A bold orange from Topshop Lipstick in ‘Ohh LaLa’ doesn’t hurt, either.”

“I love that you could wear this to work (depending on where you work), but it’s chic enough for after-5 cocktails. Get this Tildon zip-seam pencil skirt (did I mention leather is huge for fall?). I paired it with a modern top in a hot hue from ASTR and a chunky Bonnie Jonas necklace. And you totally need at least several pairs of cool sunglasses. A girl’s gotta maintain a little mystery.”

Savvy Loves: Blogger Rachel Parcell of Pink Peonies

We at Savvy HQ have had a crush on Utah-based blogger Rach Parcell of Pink Peonies for a while now (here we spotted her at Fashion Week). The brunette beauty puts together classic, ladylike looks tweaked with personal twists—like a pop-of-color bag or a bold piece of jewelry—that get us at hello. We’re excited that she loves us too.

For a taste of her sartorial prowess, check out how she’s repping the recent monochrome trend by pairing these bright-blue WAYF track pants with matching Sole Society pumps and a slightly preppy blouse that echoes the cool tone. Not to mention that contrasting M•AC ‘Candy Yum Yum’ lip. Sigh. And the crush continues…

Savvy Summer Mobile Tour: Lollapalooza 2013

Last weekend, we gassed up our can’t-miss-it vintage VW bus and tooled around the streets of Chi-town just in time for the massive music free-for-all that is Lollapalooza.

Our Savvy team shared the Lolla love with heart-shaped fans to cool concert-goers (thanks MINKPINK!), as well as wristbands good for 25% on Savvy merch in Nordstrom stores. We gorged on food that would have broken our calorie-counter  app—if we’d been using it—and grooved to everything from pillow-lipped chanteuse Lana Del Rey to L.A. folk-rocker Father John Misty (remember him from the Sub Pop Jubilee?) to Goth godfathers the Cure. There was also a parade of seriously cool street-style—check out our faves below.

Name: Sarena. From: Los Angeles. Occupation: Student. Most Excited to See: Alt-J.

We love, love, love Sarena’s look. Her cropped cami is perfect for beating the heat—as is her super-chic short hair—but she balances the belly-baring piece with a high-waisted midi skirt in a cool print. That chain necklace is a bold choice, too.

Name: Melissa. From: Asbury Park, NJ. Occupation: Retail Merchandiser. Most Excited to See: Brick + Mortar.

With her sun-shielding, wide-brimmed hat, vintage-looking shades and floral skirt, Melissa is totally rocking our Urban Nomad trend.

Names (l-r): Rachel & Gary. From: Chicago, IL. Occupation: Students. Most Excited to See: Lana Del Rey (Rachel), Vampire Weekend (Gary).

Prints are huge right now, but Rachel’s & Gary’s choices are next-level. We’re also way into how Rachel paired a baroque scarf-print shirtdress with pair of very well-loved 18-hole Doc Martens. Kudos to you, lady. Kudos to you.

Names (l-r): Margaret & Kat. From: Charlotte, NC. Occupation: High school history teacher (Margaret), graphic designer (Kat). Most Excited to See: Nine Inch Nails.

Sure, there’s a lot going on here, but part of what makes these two ladies look so awesome is that they don’t look like everybody else. They clearly have fun with their fashion, and we’re especially fond of anything having to do with cats. (This cat tee!)

Name: Madi. From: Evanston, IL. Occupation: Student. Most Excited to See: The Cure.

It makes sense that Madi was most excited to see the Cure, since she’s pulling off moody, modern-Goth style as well as Robert Smith. Her torn-up message tee—and studs and camo—toughen up the look. Why not D.I.Y. your own?

You guys, we had such a blast at Lollapalooza that we’re heading out again this weekend! Look for us (or rather, our bus) as we hit the streets of San Francisco for the Outside Lands Festival, August 9-11. And bring your Savvy style!

Talking Savvy: L.A. Market Trip

Check out weekly posts from Sarah Hendren, our super-stylish Savvy buyer, as she fills us in on all things Savvy—from the hottest trends to the bands she’s loving right now to dreamy vacation spots you might not know about.

It’s Savvy Buyer Sarah Hendren’s job to make sure you get your hands on the hottest trends as they’re happening, so every couple of months, she hits up sartorial hot spots like New York or L.A. to meet with clothing vendors (it’s called going to “market”), and if she likes what she sees, she buys it.

But we were curious: what does a fashion-maker like Sarah wear when she’s on the road (and where are her favorite places to hang)? We asked her just those questions after a recent jaunt to Los Angeles.

“These lightweight pants from WAYF are professional enough for meetings, but the print makes them so much cooler than basic black. Add some earthy accessories and a boxy crop top—and my iPad, of course—and I’m ready for a busy day. “

“It can be tough to get away for a proper lunch, but if I can manage it, there’s nothing better than a lobster roll from Son of a Gun in WeHo. They are insanely good.”

“I like to change for drinks before dinner—which are a must after a a long day of meetings. No one should say no to animal prints. I mean, they’re basically a neutral! I stay at The London and the rooftop bar there is stunning, but it can get a little chilly after dark, so I always have my Mural moto jacket on hand. It adds just the right amount of edgy cool to everything.”

“For dinner, I’ll make the trek to Venice for a wood-fired pizza from Gjelina, it’s that good. I make sure to get some greens, too; they source most of their produce from the Santa Monica Farmer’s Market, so you know it’s fresh. The rustic design here is so cozy and charming—it’s definitely one of my favorite places in Southern California.”

Talking Savvy: Sarah Hendren’s Croatian Vacation

Check out weekly posts from super-stylish Savvy buyer, Sarah Hendren, as she fills us in on all things Savvy—from the hottest trends, to bands she’s loving, to dreamy vacation spots you might not know about.

Even though summer officially begins in June, there’s just something about the 4th of July that seems to kick off the season for real, and nothing says summer like a long vacation—preferably on a beach somewhere.

Instead of the usual suspects like Cabo or the Virgin Islands, why not try something a little less expected? Croatia’s Dalmatian Coast has mild temps, rich history and crazy-beautiful views, as our travel-loving Savvy buyer, Sarah, recently found out. Read on as she shares the best places to hit up.

“My first stop was Dubrovnik, a bustling city filled with mind-blowing history. There are these massive walls surrounding most of the Old Town, built centuries ago as protection. It’s perfectly preserved and so authentically medieval-feeling that some of Game of Thrones is filmed here! I stayed at the seriously luxe Hotel Excelsior. It’s right on the water, has insane views and is a quick walk to the gates of Old Town. And Proto, in Old Town, has delicious seafood plucked right from the waters of the Adriatic Sea.”

“Next up: Hvar, a dreamy island north of Dubrovnik. Hotel Adriana was another spot with stunning views. They’ve got a spa, too, but who’s going to be stressed out here? I had an amazing meal at Konoba Dionis on the Pakleni Islands, but just know you have to take a boat and then hike a bit to get there, so make reservations. It’s no fun to show up and find out this tiny, authentic spot is all booked up.”

“On my last day in Hvar, I hopped a boat (it’s pretty much the only way to get around here) for a day trip to Vis to check out the Blue Grotto—a sea cave that glows blue at certain times of the day. The trip was SO amazing, and I can’t wait to go back.”

Savvy Loves: Blogger Rachel Nguyen of That’s Chic

Even though she was raised in the OC, Rachel Nguyen’s style is about as far from The Real Housewives as you can get. Her blog, That’s Chic, showcases her spot-on blend of new and vintage finds that’s enhanced by her relaxed West Coast vibe and sunny personality—which is exactly why we wanted to chat with her. We grabbed a few minutes with the now L.A.-based blogger.

Above: Leith Top

Give us five words you think best embody what your style is all about.
Casual, eclectic, A-line, quirky, minimal.

You relocated to L.A. not too long ago. What are your favorite hot spots in your new city?
I’m currently still exploring my neighborhood, Larchmont, and eating my way through it. I also find myself around Griffith Park a lot, mostly hiking.

If you could only buy one magazine for the rest of your life, which would it be?
Kinfolk or Lula. Leaning more toward Kinfolk.

Your day-of-the-week features on That’s Chic are super-fun—we especially like Music Mondays! Is there a musician whose style makes you swoon?
It changes all the time! Stevie Nicks is an obvious choice, so I’ll go with Frank Ocean.

We saw pics of your cat, Lena, on your blog—she’s so pretty! Can you share a recent crazy cat story?
Thank you! Well, she’s a crazy cat in general, but one night I was on my computer and saw a HUGE spider in front of me. Being terribly arachnophobic, I flipped out, went to grab paper towels, came back and couldn’t find it. Terrified, I tried just going to sleep only to see that it had migrated to the ceiling above my bed and was about to land on Lena’s head! Motherly instinct took over and I grabbed a paper towel to squish the spider and save my poor cat from that hideous thing. Then the best thing happened: Lena saw the spider, swatted it to the floor and ate it. Since then, I’ve felt secure about stray bugs. And I’m obviously a cat person to have told such a long story!

Above: Rachel’s “Crazy Cat”, Lena

You’ve professed a deep love for Disneyland. What’s your favorite ride at the park?
That’s like picking your favorite child! I’ll list my top 3: Space Mountain, Tower of Terror and Jungle Cruise.

Tell us about the trends you’re really feeling right now.
I’m really digging tropical prints and tapered pants.

WAYF Track Pants | Topshop Tapered Trousers

You went to Coachella this year—FUN! What was your favorite band to see?
So much fun. It was amazing seeing Local Natives and Yeasayer, but I missed a bunch of bands I wanted to see! Namely New Order and Red Hot Chili Peppers.

Lightning round!:

Monochrome or mixed prints?

Topknot or flowing locks?
Flowing locks—I like a bob.

Horoscopes or tarot?

Punk rock or pop music?
Punk rock.

Thanks, Rachel! Check out tapered pants, tropical prints and more in our Savvy department (sorry, no kitties… unless you count this one).
