Asking for a Friend: How to Wear a Scarf Now

“Asking for a Friend” is our advice series that seeks to solve all manner of fashion predicaments with the help of our smart and stylish Nordstrom colleagues.

Scarves, so pretty. So elegant. So confounding. Although this simple strip of fabric is often lauded as an instant outfit upgrade, wearing a scarf is an acquired skill. To that end, we spoke with our Styling Director, Ruth Basloe, on the best ways to wear one now.

The question: How to wear a scarf without looking like our bubbies? More to the point, how and where do you tie them?

The advice giver: Nordstrom Styling Director Ruth Basloe

The solution: “The freshest way to wear them right now is in place of another type of accessory, so as a necklace, bracelet or belt,” says Ruth. “I’m glad to see scarves having a moment as they come in handy when I can’t be bothered to think about my outfit. I just grab a basic white shirt and pants, and a scarf instantly adds a level of sophistication.”

Below, we’ve got it all tied up for you: some photo inspiration, guidance from Ruth, plus a video that shows ways to wrap a scarf and some shopping links.

Nordstrom Welcomes Hermès, an Olivia Kim-Curated Shop-in-Shop Only at Our Seattle Flagship

“Surrounded by Hermès silk spaghetti strands and pinching myself [that] this dream project came to life,” wrote Olivia Kim via Instagram early on Tuesday morning. The image she was captioning showed her standing in the newest must-snap selfie spot—smack dab in the middle of one of the brand new, ultra-modern and very cool design elements in Nordstrom Welcomes Hermès, a temporary shop-in-shop experience that she curated only for our Downtown Seattle flagship.

And really, we do mean “only.” Olivia’s Hermès edit is just in Seattle and not available online, and our collaboration marks the first time the nearly two hundred-year-old brand has co-created a dedicated home for exploring the colorful and expertly crafted extras that make it such a covetable name.

As you might imagine, that one-of-its-kind emphasis on men’s and women’s scarves, ties, and jewelry means there’s a beautiful and immersive selection of it all; there’s also an entire year to take it all in.

Spring’s Casual Layers: Our 3 Go-Tos

Spring’s warmer days can still come with a chill. We’re sharing our favorite light layers to have on hand for transitioning weather—perfect for maintaining your casual polish when a breeze picks up during al fresco brunches or lazy days on the boat.

Scarves. Sure, this one’s a no-brainer, but it bears repeating: A lightweight scarf is an easy way to make a statement and simply tucks into (or ties onto) your handbag when temperatures rise. Find some inspiration with our 16 ways to wear a scarf video.

Open-Weave Knits. Toss over fitted tanks and maxi dresses to keep your casual spring outfits loose and airy while still looking put together.

Denim Shirts. Reach for one of these anywhere you would a denim jacket. They’ve got that classic look, but feel a lot breezier—and there are so many ways to wear them.

One last tip: Adding an extra layer is just one more versatile way to express that amazing personality of yours. Whether your passion is color, pattern, playful proportions or all of the above, have fun mixing it up!

On the Dots

While polka hats and polka jackets may have widely been forgotten like their namesake dance, the whimsy of a classic polka-dot print endures.

Polka dots create a playful pattern that’s both graphic and feminine at the same time, and their retro-ladylike vibe is having yet another moment in the spotlight. Have a ball with large, bold dots, or keep it subtler with smaller diameters; we’ve got plenty of polka dots to fill up your fashion dance card.

The Headscarf: Summer Hats’ Alter Ego

We love hats for sunny weather, but a lightweight headscarf has become one of our new favorites in headwear. It’s a perfect, unfussy way to tame unruly hair while punching up casual summer basics—like cutoffs and a tank—and good for anything from looking cool and carefree at the beach to running errands around town, without worrying about who you might run into.

The key to rocking the headscarf? Proportion, material and color. Keep the length long, for flirty floating tails. Choose a vibrant print or color in a fabric that’s light and airy. Stick with your basic tops and bottoms or swimwear here—e.g. save your favorite tribal maxi dress for another time to avoid looking like you’re going to read somebody’s palm.

Knot it up, pair it all with aviators or oversized sunglasses, a big tote, cute espadrilles, and you’ve got a ‘70s-inspired, glam-gypsy mix that’s ready for wherever summer takes you.
