Runway Rundown: Band of Outsiders

Illusion played a big part in creative director Scott Sternberg’s fall 2014 presentation for Band of Outsiders, which celebrated its 10th year in January. From faux toggles on a raincoat to silhouetted eyelashes on a black sweater, trompe l’oeil details gave the collection a clever, playful vibe.

But it wasn’t all cheeky — Sternberg cited historical fashion icons Elsa Schiaparelli and Lee Miller as inspiration. This materialized in long black gloves, fur collars and ’40s silhouettes.

Athletic Prep at Band of Outsiders

There was no ambiguity when it came to Band of Outsiders creative director Scott Sternberg’s preferred silhouette for spring 2014: oversized, billowing and seriously breezy. Skirts came clear to the floor. Jackets were voluminous and airy, made of nylon and mesh—both heavily utilized materials throughout the collection. The current sporty trend fits nicely in Sternberg’s wheelhouse—he’s sending his prepsters off to the gym with a stop at the beach along the way.

Band of Outsiders Grabs the Joystick

There’s something charming about a creative director who isn’t afraid to show his playful side. To kick off Band of Outsiders’ fall/winter 2013 collection—and tenth year in business—Scott Sternberg orchestrated a complex scavenger hunt, sending participants on a trek around Manhattan that’s still live-streaming on the brand’s website. As for the collection itself, he cites a slew of different Atari games as inspiration. Those familiar with old-school video games may recognize the asteroids, adventure keys and combat tanks woven into sweaters and echoed in dresses.
