Menswear Icon Nick Wooster on Sneakers, Style and What Every Man Should Have in His Closet

Mr. Nick Wooster has been called an Internet superhero and the “alpha male of American street style.” Some fans even call him Woost God. He’s got upward of half a million followers on Instagram, and photographers hound him at Fashion Week and Pitti Uomo. It’s safe to say he knows a thing or two about style.

Mr. Wooster can also boast (if he were so inclined) 30 years of experience as a fashion director and creative consultant at highbrow retailers around the world. So it’s safe to say he knows a thing or two about luxury.

Which is why his new collaboration with Brooklyn-based sneaker company GREATS is so exciting. From luxurious Italian craftsmanship to Instagram-worthy designs, these bold, playful shoes are made to be enjoyed. We caught up with him between promotional appearances for the Nick Wooster x GREATS collection to ask him a few questions about shoes, style and what every man needs in his closet.

Asking for a Friend: How Do I Wear Dad Sneakers?

‘Asking for a Friend’ is our style advice series.

The dad sneaker has been coming on for a minute now, even before A$AP Rocky championed the Balenciaga Triple S in GQ last fall. Some trace it to Ian Connor’s stubborn preference for Skechers, while others point out that adidas Originals x Raf Simons debuted the Ozweego way back in 2013. Regardless of the origin story, this clunky, chunky supershoe is here to stay for a while—maybe even muscling your sleek Common Projects kicks to the back of the closet.

So how do you wear dad sneakers without actually looking like your dad? Pair them with other dad-inspired pieces that have been tweaked for the 21st century. Think ’90s silhouettes, boxy and oversized, with exaggerated proportions that feel perfectly modern.

Here are three looks to get you started.

Nike Air Max 270 Style

The Evolution of Nike Air Max

Since legendary Nike designer Tinker Hatfield put the brand’s revolutionary air technology on display in 1987, the Air Max has earned a devoted following that includes sneakerheads, athletes, pop stars and, most recently, the fashion elite. Rita Ora rocks them on- and offstage, and Beyoncé has been spotted in a pair (in Liquid Gold, of course). Fashion Week attendees count on the sneaker for walking comfortably from show to show, and minimalist-style-queen Phoebe Philo pairs them with understated separates. The sneaker is majorly cushioned, incredibly innovative and super fly—a solid streetwear staple. March is Nike Air Max month and to celebrate, we’re looking back at a few iterations of the game-changing sneaker.

Sneaker Beat: Top Picks for Air Max Month

Nike Air Max day is March 26, but let’s be honest—a single day is not enough. To kick things off, we asked our sneaker buyer to share his top pick (which is a little bit like asking someone to choose his favorite kid). After some hard negotiating, he submitted his top two, both totally innovative and both available in head-turning colorways.

Why our buyer loves it: “The 270 is the perfect mix of fashion and function, it’s that Nike innovation in action. The Hot Punch colorway makes it a natural for street style.”

From Our Friends at Who What Wear: Textured Sneakers Are In for Fall

At Who What Wear our editors get major outfit inspiration from fashion girls and celebs, and we love spreading the word about everything from affordable pieces we’re freaking out over to what’s trending now. Keep an eye on our guest posts for street-style looks, editor-approved must-haves, expert how-tos, fashion news and lots more.

One of our favorite things about autumn is all the irresistible textures. Lightweight, summery cotton is out, and plush, cozy fabrics are in. Layering those fabrics and textures is a chic way to dress for the season, and we like to bring them in from head to toe. Embellished boots immediately come to mind as quintessential for fall, but sneakers are following the texture trend, too. We’re seeing lots of satin, suede, crinkled leather and even corduroy. They make sporty styles more refined, which means they’re perfect for styling with our favorite fall looks, whether maximal or minimal. Luxe up your sneaker game with the newest most-wanted pairs—and scroll through for some cool-girl outfit inspiration.

While we’ll rarely pass up a good a statement sneaker, we also can’t resist the pairs that go with everything. Whether lace-ups or slip-ons, neutral kicks are the ones we find ourselves reaching for again and again. Black and white is the quintessential graphic combo, while all-white is crisp and sporty. We also happen to think that pale pink is a surprisingly neutral color choice. Yes, really! Pink pairs well with black, grey, white and brown—all great color anchors for any fall wardrobe.
