Asking for a Friend: How to Dress Up Without Wearing a Suit?

Situation: You’re stepping out and need to look great. Good is not good enough. But you don’t want to go full formal. You will ask yourself: How to dress up without wearing a suit?

001_regularSHOP: velvet blazers | graphic tees | skinny trousers loafers

The big idea in this and the following looks is to mix suiting elements with stuff you’d wear normally. Make this casualized concept part of your personal style. Keep in mind dark colors can be a shortcut to elevated style, and be sure your jacket and shoes are always on point.

Cozycomfycool: Cold-Weather Looks

Styling by Morgan Dillon; images by Matthew Sumi

Is there any amount of cozy that’s too cozy? When the weather gets cold, the answer is no. With athleisure feeling less like a trend these days and more like a paradigm shift, designers are putting comfort at the forefront of their fashion. It’s all the better for stacking clothes and taking coziness to the max. Try stepping out of the house wearing fuzzy socks—fuzzy shoes, even—and two jackets at the same time: a middle layering piece and an overcoat. Then you shall know the true meaning of cozy. Be inspired by these looks and layer up.

Our model here is Tay Sean, rapper and producer extraordinaire. If you don’t know him, his new album, Leavings, is outstanding experimental hip-hop. Dressing-wise, he has a unique style, so we met with him ahead of time in the store so he could help choose clothes from our men’s and men’s designer departments. His reaction:

“I didn’t realize Nordstrom had so much cool stuff.”

Check out our cozy looks below and our interview with Tay Sean about his music and personal style.

Early Fall Essentials, Including the Rare Combo of Shorts & Long Sleeves

Photos by Steven Patenaude; modeling by Sean O’Leary AKA DJ Soffos, check him out

There are a million reasons to get excited about early fall: football on TV, whiskey makes a comeback, there’s less perspiration on your bike ride to work, your ancient, rusty truck starts to match the foliage…. And you can finally start to wear most of your clothes again. As our Studio N stylist Morgan Dillon puts it:

“Early fall is the beginning of sweater weather, a time to break out layers and jackets. It’s also a time to make some rare outfit combinations. For example: shorts with long sleeves, one of my all-time favorite looks.”

Shop these outfits Morgan put together and be inspired to get creative with early fall dressing. You got this. Note that all the shoes pictured here are by Common Projects, a designer brand that we sell only in stores, with some exceptions. Call us at 1.888.282.6060 to see which colors and styles are available or to place an order over the phone.

Asking for a Friend: How to Wear the Farmer Cuff, Big Break and Trim Casual Trouser?

We had our in-house aces at Studio N depict a few calculated style risks for the upcoming cold season, because sometimes it’s good to step outside your comfort zone.

Style risk: the farmer cuff

The farmer cuff (no actual farming required) is absolutely trending. Wear it with no socks or no-show socks, always. This roughly six-inch cuff turns your regular pants into a pair of cropped pants. It’s a lot more successful with vintage-feeling, wide-leg styles.

Alternatively with dark denim or chinos, avoid the farmer cuff and do a clean double roll. Same goes with cargos. Speaking of: there’s a passé but vocal perception about cargo pants being corny, a Disneyland dad thing. Ignore that. The cargo pant is a classic. A small double roll works well with a thin cargo. Since there’s so much going on leg-wise already (the cargo pocket), it’s about keeping it sleek.

Style Risks for Fall: Chunky Turtlenecks and Layered Jackets

We had our in-house aces at Studio N depict a few calculated style risks for the upcoming cold season, because sometimes it’s good to step outside your comfort zone.

Style risk: work a chunky turtleneck sweater into your outfits.

Wear your chunky turtleneck (this really just means a heavier weight turtleneck sweater) with jeans and a casual coat. You should probably not wear your chunky turtleneck with a blazer: you might look like Pierce Brosnan in Remington Steele. Frankly, it’s just not a modern look. But chunky turtleneck + jeans + casual coat = winner. And by casual coat we mean a work jacket, chore coat, utility jacket, anything boxy and slightly oversized so you don’t render your weighty knit an uncomfortable burden.

It’s Personal: Barb Penoyar’s All-White, Natural Light Portraits

In this series, we talk to artists and designers about their most personal works and the projects that are closest to their hearts.

Shout out to Dej Loaf: there’s just something godly about rocking white.

We’re especially feeling that vis-à-vis these recent portraits of model Magor M’Bengue by Nordstrom Senior Photographer Barb Penoyar–portraiture being something she does in her free time, after she’s shot the looks that our in-house Studio N needs for the day. Her current theme is “In/On White.” Expect to see more of Barb’s portraits on this blog, all shot with 100% natural light.

“This ‘In/On White’ thing might evolve over time,” she says, “but for spring I’m inspired by white on white.”

Behind the Scenes at Studio N

Ever wonder what goes on at Nordstrom’s Seattle headquarters? We took a field trip to one of our photography studios for a peek at a day in the life of our stylists, photographers and models.

Studio N in Georgetown is one massive warehouse, split up into several mini studios. On the day of our visit, nearly every one was buzzing with models, art directors and stylists.

We popped in on a product shoot and found a stylist outfitting a model in a summery Diane von Furstenberg dress. Note the gigantic vertical monitor displaying images as they’re shot—handy for spotting and perfecting every fabric wrinkle or flyaway hair.

Chaotic makeup table, or dream vanity? Either way, we found out that there’s definitely a method to the madness.

These Michael Kors vachetta leather wedges were just one of the stylists’ many enviable shoe options.

Speaking of options, behold the studio’s shoe closet. Floor-to-ceiling footwear? Paradise! This Vince Camuto color-blocked sandal was particularly distracting.

Now, let’s take a walk down Merchandise Lane, shall we?

Clothes, clothes and more clothes! Our stylists have to stay super-organized, labeling each piece and putting them all back in the exact, right place, every time.

In another studio down the hall, a stylist puts the finishing touches on a male model’s shirt. He’s already got his stance down, broad shoulders and all.

We’re never short of inspiration around here. A magnetic bulletin board showcases the latest looks catching our collective eye.

And that’s a wrap! Tell us what you think of our insiders’ tour—we’ll be bringing you more behind-the-scenes action as we unveil our spring photography. Stay tuned!
