Mad for Monochrome: How to Wear Head-to-Toe Color

Photos by Indigital Images

Forget the black-on-black uniform from last winter. Instead, opt for all-cobalt office wear or ballet-pink velvet. As monochrome trends get more colorful by the season, we say the brighter the better. One-tonal outfitting may seem challenging at first. But don’t be intimidated. Just focus on the structural elements of your garb, like texture and shape, and remember that now’s the time to play with accessories—also, a statement red lip goes far in elevating your look.

Read on for some of our favorite colors and shopping options for going full-on monochrome, so you can lead the trend.

Fashion Week Street Style Style

Our Favorite Style Stars from Paris Fashion Week Spring 2018

Photos by Crystal Nicodemus

Our street-style photographer Crystal Nicodemus on the ladies whose looks commanded her lens.

Paris Fashion Week was a maelstrom of standout fashion and chaotic venues, with the city as a stunning backdrop to classic styles. Trench coats and menswear-inspired suiting were among the top themes. Texture continued to command, with lots of corduroy, shearling, velvet and silks. Patterns tended to be more masculine than we’ve seen of late: more plaid than floral, more stripes than animal. The palette was also a bit more subdued than we saw in New York; tans and browns abounded, with pops of red and yellow to keep things bold.

It’s been an absolute pleasure sharing this journey with you all.  I hope you’ve enjoyed peeking in on the wildest month of the fashion calendar. Merci, mes amis!

On the final day of Paris Fashion Week, Chanel brought down the (green)house with nature-themed escapism starring a waterfall and Kaia Gerber. The show displayed awe-inspiring, colorful, feminine silhouettes that have us already clamoring for spring. Not so fast, though.

For now, we’re clearly counting on the cold weather, while taking pages from these street-style aficionados’ fall outfits. Ahead, four final (totally weather-appropriate) looks from Paris’s streets that you can shop now.

From Our Friends at Who What Wear: Textured Sneakers Are In for Fall

At Who What Wear our editors get major outfit inspiration from fashion girls and celebs, and we love spreading the word about everything from affordable pieces we’re freaking out over to what’s trending now. Keep an eye on our guest posts for street-style looks, editor-approved must-haves, expert how-tos, fashion news and lots more.

One of our favorite things about autumn is all the irresistible textures. Lightweight, summery cotton is out, and plush, cozy fabrics are in. Layering those fabrics and textures is a chic way to dress for the season, and we like to bring them in from head to toe. Embellished boots immediately come to mind as quintessential for fall, but sneakers are following the texture trend, too. We’re seeing lots of satin, suede, crinkled leather and even corduroy. They make sporty styles more refined, which means they’re perfect for styling with our favorite fall looks, whether maximal or minimal. Luxe up your sneaker game with the newest most-wanted pairs—and scroll through for some cool-girl outfit inspiration.

Our Favorite Style Stars from Milan Fashion Week Spring 2018

Photos by Crystal Nicodemus

Our street-style photographer Crystal Nicodemus on the ladies whose looks commanded her lens.

I had expected Milan Fashion Week to continue the exuberance of New York, perhaps even more committed to the wild patterns and colors we’ve seen thus far, but the fashion capital is full of surprises.

Overall, the week felt rather subdued. There was an abundance of delicate florals and subtle animal print. Colors were rich, but not overly bright. The true highlight of the week was texture—velvet, soft wools, cashmere, silks and satins, and shearling—all sumptuous and touchable. Tailoring also made a strong appearance, with many a blazer and femme power suit parading down the streets.

Ahead, the styles that make it all worthwhile and the women who make it look effortless.

New York Fashion Week Spring 2018 Fashion Week Street Style Style

Our Favorite Style Stars from New York Fashion Week Spring 2018

Photos by Crystal Nicodemus

Our street-style photographer Crystal Nicodemus on the ladies whose looks commanded her lens this NYFW.

New York Fashion Week has come and gone in a delightful whirl of excitement—and exuberant clothes. The color palette was a veritable rainbow. Everywhere I looked there was another display of bold colors, patterns, ruffles, delicate fabrics and loads of floral dresses.

Silk and velvet were the major textile themes on feminine silhouettes, but denim ruled the streets. Texture was important; patent leather, corduroy and shearling all made interesting appearances. The embellished shirt continues to evolve and gain popularity, but the power suit leads for the most compelling style staple for fall.

Suffice to say that it was a gorgeous and inspiring week for style. Ahead, you’ll find the the street-style stars (and their Instagram accounts) who are challenging me to break free of my minimalist dress code.
