Tanya Taylor’s Island Holiday, Plus How to Get MAC’s Fresh-From-Vacation Look | Backstage Beauty

Tanya Taylor is feeling refreshed after a spate of vacations this summer that included trips to Capri and Cuba. But these were working vacations. The talented designer always paints her own prints, this time she did so while taking botanical inspiration from her travels. Her intensely textured and artisan-inspired spring 2017 collection not only features these flamboyant florals but also prismatic embroidery, sequins and palm-leaf perforations. While these are clothes that grab attention, they are also just lovely and fun—or how a vacation should be.

M•A•C makeup artists furthered the holiday theme of Tanya Taylor’s collection by creating dreamy, beach beauty with luxurious skin and a flushed cheek using palettes from their Spring ’17 Trend Forecast collection. Even if you can’t take off to a tropical island now, you can look like you just returned from sunning with this simple makeup how-to.

New York Fashion Week Last Looks: Yesterday’s Runways at Jason Wu, Tanya Taylor, Kate Spade and Rihanna x PUMA

Notorious for flouncy dresses doused in microprints, Jason Wu surprised on Friday by kicking off New York’s Fall Fashion Week with a casually moody collection.Jason_Wu_149_fw16Photos: InDigital

Among the designs we’ve come to expect from Wu, overly long sweater sleeves, curve-hugging knit midi dresses and simplified blown-up prints are not first on the list. Consider yesterday’s collection as the grunge-inspired counterpart to his fall 2015 collection, a sexier and slouchier departure from last season’s luxurious furs and slinky gowns.

Not to say Wu’s signature feminine frill didn’t make an appearance in the form of individually placed plumes loaded on flowing dresses and oversized coats alike. The additional layered lace minis, bleeding floral prints and strappy backless dresses helped balance the masculine trouser and knit combos, ’60s-inspired miniskirt suits and dilated windowpane prints. Standout pieces include a lone brown leather trench (expectedly two sizes too big in design), detachable fur capelets and, of course, his seasonally sought-after bag—this time a shoulder saddle sack in pretty much any material from acid-toned snakeskin and white fur front to foolproof black.

New York Fashion Week: Tanya Taylor’s Cool Crowd Wears (Surprise) Tanya Taylor

As I looked around Tanya Taylor‘s bustling, buzzy presentation on Friday afternoon, it seemed that everyone in the downtown Manhattan space was wearing the young New York City-based designer’s clothing. Colors were electric, silhouettes and hemlines were artfully mixed (high with low, low with high) and prints, patterns and playfulness were favored.

After spending the first 10 minutes with one eye on the stylish crowd and one eye on the alluring gradients of fall color—from rust to black to bright to neutral—I decided that, yes, lots of these women were wearing Tanya Taylor, but more to the point: Tanya Taylor designs exactly the way we dress. She makes clothes that fold effortlessly into what we are already pulling on.

And yet she manages to push us forward too—with color, with cut and with an imaginative collaging of all of it.

New York Fashion Week S/S 2016: Tanya Taylor + Paul Andrew = Perfect

We first met Tanya Taylor in person at Paris Fashion Week, when her deft handling of pattern-on-pattern-on-print was held up in the CFDA Americans in Paris exhibit. The relative newcomer’s totally wearable but wholly fresh vibe has been buzzing in the most chic kind of way ever since, making her presentation one of the most anticipated of the week.

It was lovely to walk in and see, immediately, designer footwear wunderkind Paul Andrew in the audience because that could only mean one thing: the two had teamed up once again for Taylor’s collection. The delicately beautifully and fantastically narrative flower-spotted, crystal-studded, lucite-heeled sandals were a sort of counterbalance to the volume and layers of Taylor’s ready-to-wear looks.

An Americano (or Two) in Paris, and One from Spain to Boot

Fashion Week Journal for Monday, March 9

It’s weird but true: a good coffee in Paris is hard to find. Unless, that is, you happen to go by Vogue’s Americans in Paris Fashion Week showcase where a certain award-winning, coffee-making expat is pulling shots and doling out croissants.
