I Love the ’90s | Fashion Week Beauty Trends

Photos by Indigital Images

To the tune of George Michael’s “Freedom! ’90,” Carla Bruni, Claudia Schiffer, Naomi Campbell, Cindy Crawford and Helena Christensen closed the Versace show in Milan, statuesque in sparkling gold dresses. The return of the 1990s supermodels spread like wildfire through Instagram.

On the 20th anniversary of her brother’s death, Donatella, standing arm in arm with her muses, paid tribute to the groundbreaking work of the late Gianni Versace. Featuring prints and designs he created, the show was alive with the spirit of Gianni’s most influential decade and reaffirmed the trend we’ve seen throughout the season: the ’90s are back in a major way.

From brown lipliner to sleek blowouts, see how the decade’s glamazon beauty permeated Fashion Month. Plus, shop these products to create your own original super look.

Fashion Bytes: Topshop Goes Clubbing at London Fashion Week

Welcome to Fashion Bytes, a cheat sheet for your favorite runway designers. From style inspirations to behind-the-scenes scoops, here’s everything worth knowing at London Fashion Week Spring 2018.

The brand: Topshop

The history: One of the first “fast fashion” chains in the world, Topshop was born as a youth-culture boutique in the 1960s. (It was one of the first stores to stock Mary Quant’s famous miniskirts.) The cool, affordable riffs on runway style captivated famous shoppers like the Spice Girls in the ’90s, and in 2002, the brand started sponsoring young designers for its first London Fashion Week shows. Ten years ago, Topshop launched its first capsule collection with Kate Moss; collaborators since then have included Kate Bosworth, Kendall and Kylie Jenner, and even Beyoncé.

The designer: London fashion fixture Kate Phelan (who also works at Vogue UK, and has styled everyone from Zoë Kravitz to Victoria Beckham to, of course, Ms. Moss herself) created this collection with her team. In August, Phelan announced her impending departure from Topshop this September.

Buy Them Now: Topshop’s World-Traveling Styles—and Cool News for Spring

There was a lot of news backstage at the Topshop Unique show on Sunday afternoon. The three biggest headlines were the announcement of a bridal line, the reveal of some big names in the afternoon’s runway lineup and the continuation of a buy-it-now, runway-to-retail experience.

Yeah, that means you can shop stripy jumpsuits, silk midis and more right now.

It also means that modern wedding dresses and bridesmaid styles hit Nordstrom (and only Nordstrom—aside from Topshop we’re the exclusive retailer) in April. You’ll also want to know that a beloved British model made something of a runway return—with the daughter of one of America’s biggest action heroes hot on her heels.

Last Looks: Yesterday’s Runways at Preen, Mary Katrantzou, Vivienne Westwood and Paul Smith

With decades of industry experience, Vivienne Westwood has created an unapologetic design niche, this season breaking away from fall’s inescapable bohemian trend and opting for edgy London flair.VivienneWestwoodRedLabel_134_fw16Creating a collection for adventurous, intellectual femmes (so basically the Dame herself), the designer delivered an offering of juxtaposing designs wrapped into singular looks. She channeled her quirky spirit into slouchy, wearable power suits, evening dresses over tartan trousers and workwear shirts with covetable blazers that played on proportion and crisp tailoring. Of course, there were staple Westwood pieces like a cardinal red check Prince of Wales coat, floral-lined fedoras, statement prints and haphazardly draped silk dresses that prove to be timeless.

London Fashion Week: Catching Up with Caroline Issa at Topshop on a Very Busy Day

No one’s asking you to feel badly for fashion people who have to (get to!) hustle, rush, lose sleep and miss meals to catch dozens upon dozens of beautiful dresses, coats and separates during the industry’s twice-yearly around-the-world tours of designers and collections. But the truth is: it is a hustle.

When we saw Nordstrom Signature collaborator Caroline Issa catching a bite to eat at Topshop’s pre-show cafe before taking her seat, we got a look at her day’s schedule—charmingly, hardcopy only; she is a magazine editor after all—and really, it might even make a busy mother of three and a cardiac surgeon conjure up some empathy.

London Fashion Week: The Topshop Unique Look Everyone Will Be Wearing Next Fall

Like all the rest of us, Topshop Unique is right in the middle of the nostalgia for the old days and excitement about the brave new world. The Brit brand teamed up with fashion photography’s most forward-thinking documentarian and producer, Nick Knight, to live stream their fall show—and more. The SHOWStudio founder took over the Topshop Instagram and Periscope for three hours, and proceeded to use a 3D scanner to make sci-fi evidence of Topshop’s retro girls.

We had some time before the show to ask Creative Director Kate Phelan what inspired the season’s statement coats, natty sweaters, and slinky and sheer dresses—and the move to share them all with fans and followers in such a big-bang kinda way.

Last Look: Mary Katrantzou & Topshop Unique

Brit brands across London’s runways are drawing on a range of folklore references to inject their lines with a fresh bohemian feel. Few are succeeding as eye-catchingly as Mary Katrantzou with her inclination for experimental detail. Topshop Unique (an offshoot of Topshop), too, incorporated miniature floral prints and enchanting lace while keeping its sought-after English gent-meets-It-girl aesthetic intact.

Mary Katrantzou’s rise from graduate to global brand took the designer through several stages in decorative dressing—from kick-starting the trompe l’oeil print trend eight years ago to the more recent switch from digital to hand-embellished designs. For spring 2016, all those elements came into play on a smaller, lighter scale—but no less grand. Ribbed sweaters and footless tights glittered beneath short, airy dresses decked in hundreds of tiny beads. Quilted frocks in jewel tones maintained her signature energy thanks to a light-catching shine on some and voluminous ruffles on others.

Taking In Topshop Unique with It Girls Binx & Bella Hadid

The mood backstage at Topshop on Sunday afternoon was on. As I entered through the crew door, models ready in their first looks were dancing and goofing in front of a white backdrop for a lineup of photographers. Girls like Binx, Bella Hadid and Sam Rollinson twirled through the dressers and makeup artists to kiss one another on each cheek and admire their pencil skirts, polka dots, open-weave knits and stripy, furry, bow-detailed heels. It felt like Saturday night.

“British style is eclectic; it’s about personality and being an individual,” Topshop creative director Kate Phelan told me as we watched the girls mug for the cameras.

“When I get inspired by fashion it’s about seeing people wear fashion in their own way.

And really, what’s more fun than that? Okay—maybe a runway show. Between the front-of-house and the back-of-house, the Topshop Unique presentation was a good old-fashioned good time. Turns out that had something to do with Phelan’s inspiration, too.
