Vacation Destination

Tragically, you can’t always take your vacation when you need it most: when your SAD hits its max, when confronted by a cold front, after crushing a stressful work project. Schedules are like shackles.

But there are ways to recharge without taking off time. And sweating and stretching during a soothing yoga routine might be the best way to cheat the effect of a relaxing vacation.

Recently, one of our assistant buyers—Natalia Valle, a self-proclaimed beauty junkie—took a trip to Australia. The flight to Sydney from Seattle is more than 18 hours long, which left her contemplating how best to use her air time. Luxuriating in skin care treatments seemed as good a way as any.

We asked Natalia to recommend some of her favorite products and tell us when and how to use them in flight to get that vacation glow before ever stepping off the plane. Here are her tips and picks for bringing beauty onboard.

Why did you choose this destination?

I do one large international trip a year and I have a friend who is currently traveling the world. She happened to be in Australia for the holidays—which is their summertime. It felt like the ideal time to travel to one of the farthest places on earth and meet up with my good friend. Plus, summer in the middle of winter seemed pretty spectacular.

Travel Diary Bali

Who: Lynn Frauenholz, senior web designer

Where: Ubud, Bali, Indonesia

Why did you choose this destination?

Bali seemed to have the right amount of tropical paradise, interesting culture and relaxed vibe we were looking for after getting married. There are a lot of Australian expats there, so the yoga community is huge and along with that there’s some really great organic food. Neither of us are really big beach people so we stuck to the interior of the island, but I hear there’s good surfing if that’s a selling point for someone.

Travel Diary, Lake George

GLOBETROTTER: Amy Belledin, Multi-Channel Creative Director

WHY THERE? Glenburnie has been my family’s getaway for nearly 80 summers. It’s a small hamlet off Blairs Bay on Lake George in upstate New York. Originally it began as a community for fine upstanding Scottish families (read: blue bloods from New Jersey) and featured a classic lakeside hotel and club right by the water. The club is long since gone, but a handful of the original houses are still standing.

WHY THERE? An old college friend and I wanted to meet up (he lives in New York, and I’m in Seattle). We wanted to explore someplace in the South, and neither of us had been to New Orleans as adults. Plus, the city’s mix of history, culture and cuisine (read: fried food) met all of our vacay requirements.

WHY THERE? A friend went to a charity auction and placed the winning bid to stay at a house there. Saint-Cirq Lapopie is a medieval village in southeastern France dating back to the 13th century, complete with a church and castle ruins at the top of the village. It’s rated as one of the most beautiful villages in France, so when my friend invited my husband and me to join her, we jumped at the chance. We flew to Paris and then took the train down through the French countryside (which I highly recommend) to the city of Cahors, where we met up with our friends for the 30-minute car ride to Saint-Cirq Lapopie.

WHY THERE? I’ve always wanted to visit the Greek islands. There are so many to choose from, but Santorini has the reputation of being one of the most gorgeous. The island was formed out of lava from a volcanic eruption, and the central part of the volcano sank into the sea to create a crater, or caldera. We flew to Athens and then took a 30-minute flight to Santorini. I definitely recommend flying versus taking the 8-hour ferry ride.
