WHY THERE? An old college friend and I wanted to meet up (he lives in New York, and I’m in Seattle). We wanted to explore someplace in the South, and neither of us had been to New Orleans as adults. Plus, the city’s mix of history, culture and cuisine (read: fried food) met all of our vacay requirements.

WHY THERE? A friend went to a charity auction and placed the winning bid to stay at a house there. Saint-Cirq Lapopie is a medieval village in southeastern France dating back to the 13th century, complete with a church and castle ruins at the top of the village. It’s rated as one of the most beautiful villages in France, so when my friend invited my husband and me to join her, we jumped at the chance. We flew to Paris and then took the train down through the French countryside (which I highly recommend) to the city of Cahors, where we met up with our friends for the 30-minute car ride to Saint-Cirq Lapopie.

WHY THERE? I’ve always wanted to visit the Greek islands. There are so many to choose from, but Santorini has the reputation of being one of the most gorgeous. The island was formed out of lava from a volcanic eruption, and the central part of the volcano sank into the sea to create a crater, or caldera. We flew to Athens and then took a 30-minute flight to Santorini. I definitely recommend flying versus taking the 8-hour ferry ride.

WHY THERE? My boyfriend was on an around-the-world trip and wanted me to meet him somewhere. Thailand was one of his stops, and I had never been there—plus the idea of lying on a tropical beach sounded amazing. I met him in Bangkok and we flew to Krabi Town (the gateway to the southwestern Thai beach resorts) and then went by boat to the islands of Ko Ngai, Ko Jum and Ko Phi Phi Don.

WHY THERE? I was about to move from Ft. Myers, Florida, to Seattle, and wanted to go somewhere for one last weekend of island hopping. I had never been to St. John or Jost Van Dyke in the British Virgin Islands and made a spontaneous decision to check them out.

WHY THERE? I’ve gone about seven times since 2002—I love Sayulita because it’s an authentic Mexican surf town with a mix of international people. It’s really safe—you can walk everywhere and don’t need to rent a car. Also, NO BUGS.
