Vans Launches Girls’ Skate Clinics and Events for International Women’s Day

Remember the rush of independence that came from getting your driver’s license? Cruising to your friend’s house after school or hitting the drive-through on your lunch break was game-changing. Wheels can be liberating. So can wheelies.

California sneaker company Vans is highlighting the power of skateboarding to change girls’ lives. This March, as part of “This Is Off the Wall,” the company’s campaign featuring international creative communities, Vans is featuring Girls Skate India. The foundation enlists international female skateboarders to teach aspiring boarders how to ollie and flip. Vans partnered to produce a video of skating students in Bangalore meeting with pros Lizzie Armanto and Atita Verghese. On March 8, for International Women’s Day, Vans will also begin hosting more than 100 skateboarding clinics in major cities such as Brooklyn, Chicago, London, St. Petersburg, Shanghai, Bangalore, São Paulo and Mexico City.

Asking for a Friend: How to Keep White Sneakers White?

Our stylists love to recommend white sneakers because they go with everything. And they do. Whether you’re dressing up or dressing down, please believe there is a white sneaker for you.

Once you find it, you will need to decide: is this a sneaker that looks good slightly dirty? Because yes, that’s a thing—some of the coolest sneakers out right now look filthy.

But if you answered “no,” that’s completely normal. And perhaps you’ll want to know: How should I keep my white sneakers white?

Two words for you: Jason Markk.

That’s the brand name of the shoe cleaner you need, made by Jason M. Angsuvarn, whose company is the first name in the pursuit of spotless sneakers. Check out the videos below to see how to use Jason Markk to clean your white sneakers.

Sneakers for All Budgets: Wear Them Proud

Just a quick PSA here to illustrate how clean sneakers can finish an outfit perfectly, whether they cost $500 or $50–give or take a nickel.

You probably recognize these guys from anything defining West Coast rap in the past few years. You probably recognize their shoes as well. If not, that’s DJ Mustard on the left in Balenciaga and YG on the right wearing Vans.

Off the Wall and Back in Time: Q&A with Vans’ Steve Van Doren | Pop-In@Nordstrom x Vans

Vans founder Paul Van Doren; images courtesy of Vans

For a big-picture view of Vans during our monthlong Vans-focused Pop-In shop, we chatted with Steve Van Doren, son of Paul Van Doren, founder of what began as the Van Doren Rubber Company in 1966. Steve is now Vans’ vice president of events and promotions and a lifelong Vans expert.

We talked to Mr. Van Doren about the day his dad doodled the famous “jazz stripe” which now adorns classic models like the Old-Skool and Sk8-Hi, the confluence of Vans and music (rock, rap and other)–and how, massive though it has become, Vans is still very much a family affair.

Pop-In@Nordstrom x Vans Exclusive Apparel Collection Lookbook | Pop-In@Nordstrom x Vans

For Pop-In@Nordstrom x Vans we partnered with Vans for an exclusive apparel collection for women and men, loosely based on the colors of our sneaker selection. We love the result and hope you do, too. In fact we were so impressed during the prototype-vetting process and seeing the finished products, we got Vans’ designer Vince Martinez on the horn to ask him about the collection piece by piece.

For this project, I was told it was a Pop-In Shop, which I was familiar with, so I got excited to do something extra creative. There weren’t strict parameters, just to tie back to the footwear and bring the design to life. It wasn’t a free-for-all, but I was allowed to do what I do. Usually I’m told, “Here’s your budget.” And I work with that. For this, there was no budget. I was like, OK, I’m just going to take everything to the next level: use the most expensive fabrics, work with the factories, make sure the hand-feel is good. All those things that I normally do, but I was able to give a lot more pushback.

Olivia Kim Explains Her Fuzzy Custom Vans, Back-to-School Anxiety and the Rise of the Fashion Sneaker

Our Pop-In@Nordstrom x Vans Vans selection includes Old Skools and chukkas designed by our own Olivia Kim, a project she undertook with designer Alex Dymond. You’ll be able to tell which ones they are. They’re fuzzy.

Available for adults and kids, Olivia’s faux-shearling and velvet shoes aren’t available anywhere else on the planet except for Nordstrom. They are exclusive and “fashion” (Vans also exists in the fashion world now, if you didn’t know), but above all else, fun.

Here she speaks on Kurt Cobain, cringing when brands try too hard to be down with the kids and how getting her shoes clowned in fourth grade scarred her for life.

How to Layer for Spring: Showcasing Print

How to layer for spring? Nordstrom Senior Stylist Jodi Taylor has the answers.

Images by Nordstrom art directors Bobby Kelly and Kari Pearson

Modeling by BenadriLL

This layering style is about showcasing the print of the tee. We’re doing that here by layering two shirts, and essentially thinking about the overshirt almost like a jacket, leaving it unbuttoned so the bottom layer comes through. The idea is simple. It’s a cool print; you want people to see it. In this case I chose an extremely busy print, so the shorts and shirt are relatively plain to balance that out. Balance is a key concept in styling. You don’t want to be visually overwhelming.
