Asking For a Friend: How to Talk to a Tailor

‘Asking for a Friend’ is our style advice series.

As you develop your personal style to incorporate traditional menswear, tailoring becomes essential. We understand if that causes some apprehension. But let us take care of you and you’ll see there’s nothing to worry about.

We offer alterations for free in all our stores, on almost every item. Drop in any time or make an appointment online. Our tailors are easy to speak with and ready to help.

Now let’s talk about tailoring pants. There’s not just one way to do it. You have to think about what kind of fit you want, and what kind of shoes you’re most likely to wear with the finished pants.

For inspiration, here’s how to make your favorite dress pants work three ways by tailoring them differently.

Dark Fabrics and Uncommon Varietals with Winemaker Andrew Latta

If you’re a winemaker, there’s logic behind wearing a uniform of mostly black. If you’re a winemaker like Seattle’s Andrew Latta—who is more interested in having a hand in every step of the process than running a high-volume production winery—this is especially true. The nuts and bolts of making wine are often messy and unglamorous, and red wine pairs better with dark fabrics.

Early Fall Essentials, Including the Rare Combo of Shorts & Long Sleeves

earlyfall

Photos by Steven Patenaude; modeling by Sean O’Leary AKA DJ Soffos, check him out

There are a million reasons to get excited about early fall: football on TV, whiskey makes a comeback, there’s less perspiration on your bike ride to work, your ancient, rusty truck starts to match the foliage…. And you can finally start to wear most of your clothes again. As our Studio N stylist Morgan Dillon puts it:

“Early fall is the beginning of sweater weather, a time to break out layers and jackets. It’s also a time to make some rare outfit combinations. For example: shorts with long sleeves, one of my all-time favorite looks.”

Shop these outfits Morgan put together and be inspired to get creative with early fall dressing. You got this. Note that all the shoes pictured here are by Common Projects, a designer brand that we sell only in stores, with some exceptions. Call us at 1.888.282.6060 to see which colors and styles are available or to place an order over the phone.

SHOP: all men | Calibrate sweater (available Nov. 1; this chunky Vince sweater would also work perfectly here) | ACNE Studios shorts | ACNE Studios coat

Garance Doré on Androgynous Dressing and Picking Clothes for Paris vs. New York

Garance DoréHaving wowed the fashion world and won hundreds of thousands of fans with her fetching illustrations, innovative street-style snaps and charming writing, blog doyenne Garance Doré seemed to solidify the legitimacy of the entire medium with her acceptance of the 2012 CFDA Media Award—the first ever given to a blogger.

In addition to running her beloved site, Doré has pivoted her considerable creative might into tackling projects that run the gamut from YouTube maven to book author and—finally!—designer of a Nordstrom-exclusive capsule collection from Vince.

We chatted with her about the best way to style a turtleneck, the beauty of gender-neutral dressing and why grey skinny jeans bring out her Parisian side.

Your style embodies a perfectly combined sense of Parisian chic and New York cool. What item in your closet would you say most represents your French identity? Your New York identity?

My French identity to me are my grey skinny jeans. I don’t know why, but each time I wear them I feel very Parisian. My New York identity…is probably my giant winter parka, something I never needed anywhere else I’ve lived. It gets so cold here!

Garance Doré

How did your design collaboration with Vince come about?

I think fashion is really about the way we edit our wardrobe, so we thought it could be fun to show what would be my edit of the Vince “closet.”

It’s Personal: Barb Penoyar’s All-White, Natural Light Portraits

In this series, we talk to artists and designers about their most personal works and the projects that are closest to their hearts.

Shout out to Dej Loaf: there’s just something godly about rocking white.

We’re especially feeling that vis-à-vis these recent portraits of model Magor M’Bengue by Nordstrom Senior Photographer Barb Penoyar–portraiture being something she does in her free time, after she’s shot the looks that our in-house Studio N needs for the day. Her current theme is “In/On White.” Expect to see more of Barb’s portraits on this blog, all shot with 100% natural light.

“This ‘In/On White’ thing might evolve over time,” she says, “but for spring I’m inspired by white on white.”

Fashion Week Street Style

Street Style: Zina at Thierry Mugler

I will be copying Zina’s casual-chic military style as soon as possible. I love long, loose layers, especially in white. A relaxed army-inspired jacket adds some trendy toughness to her springtime layers. The lace-up stiletto has been très popular this season, so Zina is right on trend. A lovely Céline bag adds some premium punch to the look.

Street Style: Shiona at Carven

Shiona Turini is back yet again for another go-round on The Thread. Today’s ensemble is really cool and a bit conceptual. I am so into the sash skirt; it adds drama and great movement. The military base of this outfit is spot-on trend, but Shiona makes everything look totally original. Merci, ma belle!

Street Style: Cassie at Dries Van Noten

I’m kicking myself for not getting my hands on a military jumpsuit before Fashion Week started. I love all jumpsuits and Cassie’s vintage military one piece would look perfect in my closet. A shearling-lined moto jacket works well with the utilitarian vibe, while silver boots add an unexpected hit of urban cool.
