3×1 Founder Scott Morrison Gives Jeans the Couture Treatment

Skinny, selvedge, vintage, boyfriend: spoiled by choice, why is it we still find ourselves lost on the search for the perfect pair of jeans—ones that are durable, but figure flattering; give without stretching; versatile enough to dress up or down; in a classic wash that doesn’t bulge, tear or fade. Could such a thing even exist?

Scott Morrison thinks so—he’s the entrepreneur and denim enthusiast behind 3×1 (the name comes from the 3×1 Right Hand Twill—the traditional weave used for jeans). Formerly the founder of Paper Denim & Cloth and Earnest Sewn, Morrison has positioned himself as a denim demigod with the power to accentuate your backside with well-placed pockets, or elongate limbs with his signature raw hemline.

So we asked Morrison: What makes the perfect pair of jeans? Ahead, the designer explains how 3×1 is revolutionizing the way we shop by reminding us of the elegance of quality denim.

How to Wear: Dresses Over Denim Street Style Style

How to Wear Dresses Over Denim and Why You Should

Photos by Crystal Nicodemus

The latest in everyday avant-garde combines your favorite midi dress with your go-to denim for a doubly good outfit. As seen on the street-style set (and on grade schoolers on the playground), the dresses-over-jeans craze is now in full effect—just in time for frigid temps and holiday dressing.

Below, some ways to wear the trend no matter your height or destination, plus some shoppable looks inspired by a cutting-edge fashion pack of style stars.

’70s Glam: You Should Be Dancing

All that’s good and gorgeous about the ’70s is back this season in a big way. And it’s all about being inspired by the beauty of the era. Think less bohemian and more Studio 54—the Charlie perfume girl, a young Anjelica Huston or Bianca Jagger.

This trend is showing up in everything, so there’s a piece that everyone can incorporate this fall. Find it in bow blouses, faux-fur chubbies and vests, platform shoes, flared-leg pants, hats, feathers and bold accessories.

Just be sure to keep it clean and simple. It’s about evoking a little ’70s-era chic, not dressing for a disco-themed costume party. It’s retro. It’s glamorous. And it kind of makes us want to do the hustle.

Denim Rainbow All The Way

White denim is always hot for summer, but lately we’ve been a little obsessed (okay, a lot obsessed) with denim pants and shorts of many colors this season.

Colored denim in Savvy, selected stores and online

Bright washes are all over cutoffs, cuffed shorts and skinny jeans and pants (J Brand alone has a broad spectrum of styles).

Red was the first hue to hit our radar, but then it was quickly followed by turquoise. And now orange, yellow, hot pink, green, cobalt blue and purple are in the mix.

What does this mean? You can wear these styles with a graphic or solid-colored top in tonal, complimentary or contrasting shades. The color combo just depends on how bold you want to go.

Either way, we predict a full-on rainbow of color in your closet.
