Gifted Giver: Designer Monique Lhuillier

For the second season in a row, we’re counting down the crucial pre-Christmas shopping days with a series called Gifted Givers, in which friends old and new share their thoughts on stylishly spirited giving and receiving.

We adore the signature glamor of Monique Lhuillier designs, and that she appreciates luxury doesn’t mean a total lack of playful whimsy. As evidenced by the picture she sent us of her home with those stockings hung by the chimney with care overlooked by a large white peacock. As a mom and philanthropist, Monique has a lot of experience giving to her children, charities and more, which is why we can’t think of a more worthy individual to call a gifted giver.

What stands out as the best gift you’ve ever given?
When I had my children and gave my parents grandchildren.

What’s the best gift you’ve ever received?
My kids Jack and Sophia.

Do you have a holiday shopping strategy?

I start with a list and then select a theme—anything from “bar” to “sports”. Once I have my theme, I personalize gifts for each person on my list.

What is “the perfect gift,” anyway?
The “perfect gift” should be something from the heart. It doesn’t matter the value of the gift if there is sincerity and thoughtfulness behind it.

What makes for the ultimate in giving or receiving?
Knowing that your gift brought a smile to someone’s face.

What’s your go-to host or hostess gift, either for a party or for a weekend or extended stay?
At a party you can’t go wrong with a nice bottle of wine or tequila. For an extended stay I prefer to gift something for the home like this beautiful vase from my Waterford collection, my Waterford ‘Opulence’ picture frame or a coffee table book based on their interest.

Feel free to allow us to alert your friends and family in this very public format: what would you love to unwrap this year?
I already unwrapped my gift. I love traveling to new places and exploring new cultures. Next on my list is my upcoming trip to Japan.

See more from all our Gifted Givers.
