Erin Fetherston

Designer Erin Fetherston and musician Gabe Saporta’s wedding last spring was the epitome of a fairy tale affair—and we have the photos to prove it. As she’s known for a design aesthetic that’s rooted in romance and whimsy, we weren’t surprised by the gorgeousness of the event, but we were amazed to hear that she and her fiancé pulled it all together in a mere six months!

Held at St. Nicholas Abbey—a Jacobean mansion at a rum distillery in Barbados—Fetherston got the best of two worlds: the lush landscaping of the English countryside and the warm, tropical weather of a Caribbean island. Fetherston describes the property as a truly magical place with “beautiful, formal English gardens in the front yard, a lush gully of 100-foot tall trees in back.” As she tells it, even the drive to the site, with views of rolling fields of sugar cane, was incredible.

In fact, it was the landscape that ultimately influenced the design of her dress. Originally, Fetherston says, she didn’t want a dress with a lot of volume. “I was thinking I would have a very flowing dress, maybe with a long train. I wasn’t thinking about anything structured.” But after studying a lot of photos of the venue, she realized the importance of connecting the environment and the dress.

While Fetherston’s design was part of creating a fully realized experience, and although the English garden-style wedding inspired a specific style of gown, she emphasizes that every bride should have her own approach. If the dress is the first consideration, “choose a venue that goes with the dress,” she advises.

Fetherston created a gorgeous, uniform aesthetic by always keeping her concept and the big picture in mind. One of the ways she achieved this was deciding on a color palette—not just for the decor, but her guests as well. “Instead of giving people a dress code, I gave them a color code for the wedding and for other surrounding events.” She describes how a harmonious color palette made the experience feel really special—and resulted in beautiful photos. But her unique approach didn’t stop with a color code.

In lieu of having official bridesmaids, she dressed every female guest in Erin Fetherston. “It was like the bridal party had no boundaries,” she says. Fetherston dived into her archives, pulling every dress that fit her chosen palette, and then invited her girlfriends to come choose their dresses. Looking back through her past collections, reflecting on her years as a designer and being married while surrounded by friends all wearing her designs gave even greater meaning to her wedding.

Newlyweds Joanna and Giovanni share their proposal story and destination wedding in beautiful Hawaii!

Our Proposal: We were on vacation in Cabo San Lucas with family when Giovanni suggested we take a day trip to Lover’s Beach, one of the most romantic and beautiful beaches in Cabo. When we got there, Gio turned to my mom and asked her to take our picture, and I didn’t think twice about it. But before I knew it, he was on one knee, holding a Bony Levy diamond ring. I couldn’t believe what was happening, but when he looked into my eyes, I immediately said yes! It was perfect, and I am so thankful my family was there to witness it.

The Scene: May 5, Waialua, Hawai’i
It wasn’t too long before we decided that we’d have our wedding in the same setting as our engagement: the beach! We opted for a low-key wedding on the North Shore of Oahu at a lovely beachfront home.

Planning the wedding posed quite a challenge because Oahu was a new destination for us, but I decided to plan the entire event myself anyway, and I’m glad I did! The day we arrived at the house, I was so thrilled to see this beautiful setting for the first time. I could finally envision everything falling perfectly into place.

My Wedding Stylist: Heather Rose, Downtown Seattle Nordstrom Wedding Suite

After visiting quite a few bridal shops, I decided to go to the Nordstrom Wedding Suite. I was absolutely thrilled by the selection of dresses. My stylist, Heather, guided me through the many options, helping me find the most beautiful Nicole Miller dress.

My Look: The lace dress had a v-neck, a keyhole back and a small train. The minute I slipped into it, I knew it was perfect. Heather suggested stunning Nadri accessories as the finishing touches. I also wore crystal-encrusted Steve Madden wedges, perfect for the beach setting.

The Bridesmaids: We searched high and low in every store for my three bridesmaids’ dresses, then found ourselves heading back to Nordstrom. The girls instantly fell in love with their Erin by Erin Fetherston ombré dresses in shades of orange and pink.

We added the Sam Edelman ‘Sasha’ wedges and polished off the look with some gold bangle bracelets and chunky turquoise necklaces. It was a bright, fun look!

The Men: For the boys, I had had my eye on linen for a long time. I loved the laid-back look for the beach, and I knew they would be comfortable. Giovanni wore the John W. Nordstrom linen sportcoat and pants, with a BOSS black shirt and Tod’s loafers.

His groomsmen wore matching linen vests and pants, Hugo Boss shirts with Ted Baker bow ties and Sperry Top-Sider boat shoes. They looked so handsome!

We didn’t intend for our entire wedding party to be dressed head to toe in Nordstrom clothes, but the variety of selection and the personable sales team made it so easy. Our budget, timeline and preferences were totally accommodated. What can be a difficult and stressful situation was made seamless and fun!

The Big Day: It was a perfect day on the North Shore. Our generous group of friends and family were eager to help with the final arrangements. As the girls and I were having our hair and makeup done, we were entertained by all of the boys playing in the pool below us. It was so funny to see how carefree they were only a few hours before the ceremony, as we meticulously applied mascara and curled our hair!

Before the ceremony, my mother gave me a bundle of rings that came from generations of marriages in our family. This symbolized the commitment that the many women before me had made. I had never felt so proud and excited, but I was especially moved when I my mother told me she gave Gio my father’s ring to carry as well.

As I tied the rings to my bouquet, their meaning filled me with confidence and comfort. The moment was surreal, and I couldn’t wait to be standing there with Gio.

Our ceremony was short and sweet, and our humorous minister eased our nerves. Before I knew it, we kissed and then formed a conga line down the aisle with our guests in tow, heading for the reception!

The evening came together even more as Giovanni and I had our first dance to a Dominican bachata song. We feasted upon kālua pork and spicy mahi mahi, followed by Hawaiian shave ice. While our guests enjoyed their dessert, we retreated to the beach to watch the sunset.

Soon, the music pumped up and we danced the night away! Eventually, the dance party turned into a pool party, and we then topped off the night with a fire on the beach.

The day turned out more perfect than I could have ever dreamed. Giovanni and I are so lucky that we had such an amazing group of family and friends that celebrated with us!
